ADOLPH SOMMERS, OF ALLENTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedJanuary 2, 1920. Serial No. 348,910.
To all who 1n it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLrH H. SoMMnRs,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to heels and more particularly to fastening means for effectively securing the heel to the shoe.
An important obj ect of my invention is to provide fastening means of this character which will be especially adapted for use with ladies high-heel shoes and which will effectively and positively secure the heel to the shoe and prevent breaking away of the heel from the sole at the point of attachment or of the plies of the heel from each other adjacent this point.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening means of this character of I of the high-heel type.
strong and durable construction, easily applied and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in the certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will become apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fastening means,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same, a
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing my fastening means applied,
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing a modified form of fastening means applied, i
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the modified form of fastening means.
feferring to the drawings it will be seen ,my invention contemplates ashoe indicated generally at 10 and including a sole 11 and a heel 12 attached to the sole by cement, pegs or the like. As shown, the heel 12 is p 13 indicates the line of attachment of the heel to the sole and 1a and 15 the lines between the plies of the heel adjacent the point of-attachment.
In practice it has been found that due to the shape of the high-heel and its relation to the shoe and to the weight of the wearer, that the strain at the rearmost point of attachment, that is, to the rear of the heel along the lines 13, l l and 15, is of such moment as to break away the heel from the shoe or to break away the plies "of the heel from each other adjacent this point, despite the cement, pegs or other fastening means now employed. i
To overcome and remedy this difficulty I provide an improved fastening means positioned at the point where the moment of the strain is the greatest and preferably provide a countersink therefor, as indicated at 16 in Fi 4-. The fastening means comprises a body portion 17 adapted to be seated in the countersink 16 and an integral downwardly extending donble-prong 18 adapted to be engaged over the sole 11, and an integral upwardly extending'prong 19 at its lower end adapted to be driven into the body ,of the heel. Between the upper and lower stamping or punching. the same from the body portion 17. The the body of the heel.
The region of the engagement of the prong 19 with the body of the heel is below the point where the moment of the :--strain is so great as to tend-to cause the plies of the heel to break away from each other.
In the forms of my invention shown in Figs. & and 5, the body portion of the fastening means is solid andunbroken and the middle prong 20 is dispensed with. The body portion in this form is tapered from the upper to the lower end as shown in Fig. 5. This form of fastening means is in all other respects like the preferred form. and is positioned in precisely the same manner, as shown in Fig. at.
As previously described the fastening means is seated in a countersink as shown in Fig. 4 but, if desired, the countersink may be dispensed with and fastening means applied directly to the rear face of the heel as shown in Fig. 3. The outer face of the body portion is colored to. correspond with the color of the heel and blends with the same, so as prong 20 alsg Patented May 18, 1920. Q

heel adjacent the sole break away from each 1 other or these parts show a tendency to this action. When thls occurs the countersink is formed in the'heel and the fastening means pressed or driven into position by any suitable tools, while the parts of the shoe are held in their proper position. After the fastening means has been driven home the parts of the shoe are effectively and positively maintained in proper position, strain beingtaken through the fastening means to the sol e, the part best adapted to bear the same.
I claim a v 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shoe including a sole and a heel attached thereto having a' countersinkin its rear face adjacent the point of attachment to the sole, of fastening means consisting of a body portion adapted to be seated in the countersink of said heel, a downwardly extending prong at the upper end of said body portion adapted to engage the sole, an upwardly extending prong at the lower end of said body portion adapted to engage the heel and an intermediate prong adapted to engage the heel.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shoe including a sole and a heel attached thereto, of fastening means, for securing the heel to the sole disposed at the rearrnost point of attachment and consisting of a body portion, a down wardly extending prong at its upper end engaging the sole, an upwardlyextending prong at its lower end engaging the heel and an intermediate prong engaging the heel.
3. In a device of the. character described, the combination with a shoe including a sole and a heel attached thereto, or" fastening means securing the heel to the sole disposed at therearmost point of attachment and consisting of a body portion, an upper prong engaging the'sol'e, a lower prong engaging the heel, and an intermediate prongengag-. ing the heel. U y
4, Ina device of the character described, the combination with a shoe including a sole and a heel attached; thereto, of fastening means securing the heel to the sole disposed at the rearmost point of attachment" and consisting of a body portion, an upper prong engaging the sole anda lower prong engaging the heel. i
5. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a shoe including a sole and a heel attached thereto, of fastening meanssecuring the heeltothe sole disposed at the rearrnost point of attachment and" consisting of a tapered body portion, an upper prongengaging the sole and a lowerprong engaging the h'eel ADOLPH SUMMERS.
