" FLUE-'GLEANER l Specification of Letters Patent. f Application tiledI .T lu/ney, 19,12. @Serial No. 701,343.
T0 all whom it may concern ,A
Be it known that -LELZA H. REITER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the count' :of Kane, State of Illinois, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in'Flue-Cleaners; and I do hereby declaref the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the' same. j
The present invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in a device for cleanin'g boiler iues and is in the nature of an improvement on the subject matter oi my patent forl Hue cleaner, Number 966,051, dated- Aug. 2, '1910. Thisinvention has particular application to a structure adapted to be connected to the doors of return flue boilers whereby thecleaning operation may be thoroughly and rapidly accomplished without the necessity of opening the doors. y
Still a further object of my invention is to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efici vncyl and utility of devices of this character; j
I also aim `to provide an attachment whereby each individual flue ofthe boiler may be reachedl from-a plurality of points,
in the present instance two in number, so that the cleaning operation may be speedily and conveniently accomplished.
It is also my purpose to provide a cleaning device wherein the elements constituting the same may be adjusted to such positions' as thc circumstances maydemand, and furthermore I propose tov provide 'a device which/will embodyr the desired features of simplicity and durability coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture, sale and installation.
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view myinvention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, and,
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the front portion .of a boiler and illustrating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a `front elevation of the device detached. Fig.'
3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line vided,
' 3 3 of Fig. 2. i 4 is a sectionalviewlon' the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring A indicates convenwhich lis the front thereof, 2 2 a front door and 3 the tubes or iues;
Each of thedoors is provided with an adjustable /supporting attachment for thc blower .0r cleaning device proper, and as these attachments are similar in 'construction 'a description of one will suicefor all. Each door is provided approximately centrally with an aperture 4 through' which is designed to project the tubular member of the blower, said 'opening being preferably provided with a pivote-d closure plate 5.
The numeral 6- indicatesas an' entirety a U-shaped frame having a notched or serrated Vcross bar 7, whileth parallel arms 8-8 of said frame are provided at their free ends with bolt holes 9 designed to receive the Patented sept. 29,- 1914... 1
now to the accompanying draw-,- ving in detail, the letter l tio-nallya boiler of any approved type of* shank portions 10." of the angular-hingedbolts 11, the shanks 12 of said lbolts project- `ing through the adjacent portions of the wall ofthe iue cap door. and are held in place thereto by the nuts 13, while the nuts 14 are employed topivo-tally hold the frame in position on the Shanks 10. The notched bar l`7 of each frame is propreferablycentrally thereof, with an aperture 15 for. the passage of the threaded shank 16 of the curved orsegmental bar 17. The shank is provided with' the adjustable nuts 18-18 b means of which the-length of the bar maylie adjusted to slightly raise or lower the inner` end of they blow' pipe to Vstrike the tube or liuc yat the proper point.
Furthermore the. aperture 15 issllghtly elongated and enough larger than the threaded shank 1.6 to permit of the latter hav,-
Ing sufficient lost motion to play .loosely in such aperture Vthereby allowing the weight of the bar 17'to cause it to drag on the lower edge wall of the slot 19 formed in the doorV and through which the bar projects. It will be noted that the segmental bar is provided at its under edge with a plurality of teeth or serrations 2O designed to engage withthe lower edge wall of the aperture 19 so that the bar may be adjusted to any required eX- tent within the range of the teeth-or notches,
thus -correspondingly adjusting the U- shaped frame 6. Furthermore, it will be noted 'thatfwhi-le thel segmental toothed or notched bar is carried by the U-shaped instances, with which I am acquainted it frameit, at theSametime performs the ventionally illustrated, comprises the blow pipe'21`to which is connected one end of the hose 22, the opposite end of the hose being attached as at 23 to the steam pipe 24. i
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing the construction and y operation of my improved device will be readily apparent. ln operation the doors being closed,.the segmental bar is firstadjusted to locate the U-shaped cross bar in proper po-sition to hold the blow pipe pointed towardI the Vrow of l iiues 'in which it is desired to operateand the pipe is then passed through the aperture 4in the closed door and'the inner end of the pipe inserted into one of the lues. t The steam is then. admitted through'the blower, passing through the tube from the front tothe rear, and thoroughly cleaning the soot or other products `of combustion without exposing the boiler head and drawing the cold air in with the steam. 'Ihus while blowing one tube, the draft is on all'the othertubes and the hot gases are drawn in with I,the steam practically super-heating the latter and eliminating the moisture therefrom. will be further notedl from the resent drafar-` i'ng and description that the b ower may. be,l
operated at either door opposite the center of the tube area thus blowing half the'tubes' from the center of each door. Itvwill be further seen that as the cleaner is operatedwhile the doors are closed, the bankv of tubes may be cleaned withoutchecking `the draft or interrupting the service of `the boiler. In Ipractice the bars 7 are providedjwithnotches corresponding to the nim'ibervv of tubes in each horizontal row of the tube bank so that when the device/ is in operation the shifting of the blower tube 'from one notch of the bar 7 to the next notch also shifts the inner end ofthe blower from one tube to the adjacent tube'of therow-` I am' aware of the fact that hitherto it has been proposed to support ay Hue blower pipe on the furnace in position to afford the end of the pipe access to the flue. But in all such has been necessary to form a relatively large special opening in the wall of the boiler setting, usually the rear wall, and install in said opening a specially constructed frame which carries the supporting mechanism of the blower pipe yor liue cleaner proper. Such a construction is illustrated in my earlier patent hereinbefore mentioned.V In the present instance however, by forming a special opening in the flue door at the front of the boiler I am enabled to blow the tubes from the front or the rear while the doors are closed so that there. isno interference with the draft or service of the boiler. Furthermore I obviate the expense and disadvantage of .breaking the wall of the boiler setting andinstalling the frame and other parts therein.
While I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not yconfine myself to all of the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without departin from the spirit of the invention or eXcee ing the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
The combination with a flue door formed -with an opening therein for the passage of a ktube cleaning device and a second opening for the-passagey of a segmental rack bar, of a tubecleaning device, a support for said devce comprising a Ufshaped frame, angular bolts pivotally connecting the leg portions of the lframe. to the door and at opposite sides of the iirst mentioned opening, so that the frame may swin freely on the yangular bolts, a segmental'rac bar adapted to adjustyably engage with the wall of the second opening in the-flue door, said bar having a shank projecting through a relatively large aperture inthe cross bar of the U-shaped frame so that said shank may have a limited amount of play in the aperture, and means 'for adju'stably securing the' shank portion of the` rack bar to the cross bar of the frame.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature, in presence of two wltnesses.
ELZA H. REITER.
