To all whom it Y I Be it known that I, Tnomas E. Hu'rcnms, a citizen of the United States,re siding atBeatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Flue Blowers,
of which the following is a specification.
This inventionhas for its .object an improved boiler flue blower of simple, durable and efiicient'construction which may be installed through the combustion charm-J her door without the necessity of any change in the wall, which will in its maintenance'and operation effect ec'onomies in the consumption of fuel anrlf pth ,1" respects,- as in the case of hose, which will tend to prolong the life of the boiler and improve combustion and minimize smoke and soot by insuring clean tubes at'all times, and

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the d etails of construction of the means for effecting the" re sult, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Referringto the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a steam dome on the boiler and 2 a steam supply pipe for I my improved flue blower, which is connected, at one end to the steam dome and is provided at its other end with a horizontally extending branch 3 connected therewith by the stufling box joints and mounted to rotate about its longitudinal, axis in bearings 4, soasftoconstitutea hollow shaft. The series of steam nozzles9 is'l'ocated in juxtaposition to the ends of the boiler fines and is adapted to inject steam therethrough and is capable of being rotated about its axis in different directions at angles of forty-five degrees from the vertical by manipulation of the hand lever 16 in an evident nanner. The entire series of nozzles may be shifted from one vertically extending series of fines to the next by means of the hand lever 17. In the preferred operation, this said lever is shifted one notch at a time, and
the hand lever 16 is then manipulated so as to bring the series of nozzles 9 to the vertical position in front of one set of fiues after the other as well as inclined to a greater or less extent to insure that all of the fines will be treated by. the blast of steam. It is, of course, evident that the stand pipe 7 swings in an arc of a circle. To compensate for this the series of nozzles is preferably of greater length than the height of the sets of tubcsfas clearly illustrated in the drawings. Moreover, by the provision of the hand lever 16 and the revoluble mounting of the header ll with its nozzle 9, the nozzle may be adjusted to any diagonal rows of fines. v
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple, durable, and efficient construction of boiler flue blower, which may be madea permanentifixture of the boiler and drive the soot in the direction of the natural draft out through the smoke stack, thereby taking only a short period of time to clean the boiler and that it may use absolutely dry steam and prevent the caking of the soot, while, when not in use, it may'rest at one side of the combustion chamber and not opposite any vertical row of fines. It is to be noted that the blower does not inject the steam into theflues from the front end of the boiler against the draft, which operation never effectually iii cleans tli'e la'biler and which results in more consumption of coal and blows moisture into the tubes and cakes the soot, as well as'reduction of the steam pressure and leaving the tubes in a more or less foul condition at all times. These and other disadvantages are obviously overcome by the construction'and arrangement of my device, as has been hereinbefore set forth.
2. A boiler flue blower comprising a series (a: steam nozzies, a header carrying saidnozz'ies, a stand pipe upon which said header is mounted to turn, 9. depending rod connected to said header'to turn the same, a hand lever provided with a rod having a loose connection with the first named rod, whereby the header is turned, a hollow support upon which said stand pipe is mounted to swing, a hand lever connected to said support to turn the same and swing the stand pipe, and means for supplying steam to the header through the hollow support of the stand pipe.
3. The combination with a boiler and its furnace and iiues, of a series of steam nozzles mounted within the combustion chamber and adapted to be brought into juxtaposition with the ends of the fines, a header chamber and upon which the header is mounted toturn, a
supply pipe connected to said dome at one end,;a hollow shaft connected to the other end of said steam pipe and passing through the door of the combustion chamber, the stand pipe being mounted upon said shaft, :1 quadrant, a hand lever arranged for engagement with said quadrant and operativeiy connected to the hollow shaft to turn the same, and another band lever connected vto said header to turn 'the latter.
