FURNACE-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN F. HAHLE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in thecounty of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain: new and useful Improvements 1n Furnace Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnace cleaners, and moreparticularly to an improved attachment for steam boiler furnaces which is designed to clean out the dirt and soot accumulating in the furnace back of the bridge wall, so that at any time this accumulation may be burned and blown out.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character which may be connected to any ordinary steam boiler furnace, which is of extremely simple construction,
comparatively cheap to manufacture and in-.
stall, and strong and durable in use.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully section on an enlarged scale through the steam pipe and in longitudinal section through one of the steam discharge nozzles. Figs. 6 and 7 are views partly in section and partly in elevation on an enlarged scale illustrating two different forms of steam discharge nozzle.
1 represents a steam boiler furnace having the fire box 2 in one end of the furnace and from which the smoke and gases pass over the ordinary bridge wall 3 into a relatively large chamber 4 below the tubular boiler 5. The smoke and gases pass through the tubular boiler and a flue 6 which extends from the front end of the boiler over the top thereof, communicating with a chimney 7. My invention, of course, is not limited to any particular construction of boiler furnace, and the one shown and described is for purposes of illustration only as the invention may be used with practically any style of boiler furnace.
In the bottom of chamber 1 I locate my improved attachment 8 which comprises a rectangular tubular frame made up preferably of pipes and elbows as indicated, and at one end provided with a T-coupling 9 which is connected by a branch pi )e 10 with a pipe 11. one side of the furnace, and communicates with the upper end of the boiler, the lower end of this pipe preferably terminating above the floor of the furnace room, and cooks 12 and 13 are provided in said pipe 11 above and below its point of juncture with pipe 10 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The tubular frame 8, at intervals, through out its length, is provided with screwthreaded openings 14: to receive tubular steam nozzles 15. These nozzles 15 have relatively small orifices 16 in their outer ends, and these orifices are variously ar ranged so as to discharge the steam rearwardly as well as centrally and upwardly in the direction in which it is desired to blow the soot and dirt which accumulates in the chamber 1. In other words, the nozzles 15 in the front cross pipe and in the two side pipes are horizontally disposed and project inwardly. Those nozzles which are connected to the front tube preferably have a single orifice in the center of the outer end as shown in Fig. 6, so as to discharge the steam rearwardly and in a horizontal direction.
The nozzles 15 which are connected to the side tubes or pipes are preferably provided with two orifices as indicated in Fig. 7, one discharging at right angles to the pipe and the other at an acute angle rearwardly so that the dirt and soot which is dislodged will be moved in a general rearward direction toward the rear pipe.
The nozzles 15 in the rear pipe are positioned vertically and have a single orifice 16 in their ends as shown in Fig. 6. The rear pipe is in two sections, and is connected to a coupling 17, and this coupling constitutes a partition so that the passage of steam is obstructed and compelled to pass out through the nozzles. When it is desired to clean out chamber 4, valves 12 and 13 are both opened, so that any water of condensation in pipe 11 will be discharged through the lower end of the pipe. As soon as live steam begins to flow through the end of the pipe, valve 13'is closed and this steam, which is of course dry, will be discharged through my improved attachment into the lower portion of the chamber 4., and will cause the soot and dirt to be blown upwardly and rearwardly, mixing with the products of combustion and consumed or practically consumed with the same. In any event, the chamber can be entirely. cleaned out by this method at any time desired without in any way affecting the operation of the steam boiler furnace.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my inven tion, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment for furnaces comprising a rectangular tubular frame adapted to be positioned in a furnace below the boiler and back of the bridge wall, said rectangular frame having in its sides and ends threaded openings, nozzles threaded into said open ings and having steam discharge orifices in their outer ends, of appreciably less diameter than the internal diameter of the nozzles and said nozzles and orifices so formed that the steam discharged from certain of said orifices is transversely of said furnace, from those adjacent the bridge Wall rearwardly of the furnace, and from the remainder, upwardly and in the direction of the draft or the furnace, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a steam boiler ture with the branch pipe, substantially as furnace, of a rectangular tubular frame located in the bottom of the furnace below the boiler and back of the bridge wall, said frame having screw-threaded openings therein, discharge nozzles screwed into said openings and having discharge orifices in their free ends, the nozzles at the end of the frame adjacent the bridge wall discharging rearwardly in the direction of the draft of the furnace, thenozzles in the side members of the frame discharging laterally and rearwardly, the nozzles in the rear member of the frame discharging upwardly in the direction of the draft of the furnace, and means for directing steam from the boiler into the frame at its forward end, substan: tially as described.
8. The combination with a steam boiler furnace, of a rectangular tubular frame located in the bottom. of the furnace, below the boiler and back of the bridge wall, said frame having screw-threaded openings therein, discharge nozzles screwed into said openings and havingdischarge orifices in their free ends, the nozzles at the end of the frame adjacent the bridge wall discharging rearwardly in the direction of the draft of the furnace, the nozzles in'the side members of the frame discharging laterally and rearwardly, the nozzles in the rear memberof the frame discharging upwardly in the direction of the draft, a steam pipe communicating with the boiler and extending down beside the furnace, a branch pipe connect ing the steam supply pipe with the frame at the forward end thereof, and valves in said supply pipe above and below its juncdescribed.
