JAMES M.'FERGUSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
BOILER-FLUE CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 331,782, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed February 4, 1885. Serial No. 154,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES M. FERGUSON, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Boiler-Flue Gleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a flue-cleaner operating by a jet of steam for re moval of dirt and soot from the dues, and to prevent formation of scale; and to these ends it consistsin a j et-nozzle of novel construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of my flue cleaner. Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner of use with a horizontal boiler, and Fig. 3 shows the manner of use with a vertical boiler.
The nozzle A is secured upon the end of a tube'section, B, thatis provided with a socket, a, for a handle, and a neck at b for connection of a flexible pipe, by which the steam is supplied, as shown. The connection between the nozzle A and tube-section Bis made by a pipesection, B; but the nozzle may be directly connected to the tube-section B. For vertical boilers the tube will have a right-angle bend, as at 2", Fig. 3, so that the nozzle can be properly inserted in the flue-tubes.
The general form of the nozzle A is that of a truncated cone, the base or skirt portion 0 extending out to a Width greater than the dilustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, an unbroken current of steam is discharged against the sides of the tube, with the effect to sweep out all soot and other accumulations, thus thoroughly cleansing the tube and preventing the formation of scale. The air is excluded by the close fitting of the nozzle in the tube, and a current of dry steam thus insured. The nozzle is durable, being castin one piece, and with it the work of cleaning flues can be easily and rapidly carried out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a flue-cleaner, the nozzle havinga central aperture in its disk portion, said aperture having an inner tubular extension, around which is arranged an annular space, also opening through said disk portion, said tubular extension and annular space connecting with a steam-chamber of the nozzle, all cast or made in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
