PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed May s, 1914. seriaino. 837,215.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FELICISSIMOiO. SILVA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. r
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in puzzles and more particularly to what is known as an interlocking block puzzle, the main object of the present invention residing inthe provision of an exceedingly perplexing and intricate puzzle of the above character which will provide a severe test for the ingenuity of one attempting to solve the same and consists of a plurality of bars formed with co-engaging recesses, whereby the several bars can be readily interlocked.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a puzzle of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view illustrating the first step taken in the assembling of my improved puzzle. Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating the second step. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the third step. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the bars in their interlocked position. Fig. 5 is an elevation illustrating one of the bars which is included in one of the sets; and Fig. 6 is aside elevation of one of the bars included in the other set.
In carrying out my invention, I provide two sets of bars each set composed of four bars, one of the forms of which is illustrated in Fig. 5, while the other form is illustrated in Fig. 6. Oneset of bars includes a longitudinal body 1 provided adjacent each end and at the central portion with recesses 2, which extend inwardly from each of the l0ngitudinal edges of the body in opposed relation to form a connecting neck 3. The bars including the other set comprise an elongated body member l having a central opemng 5 and are further provided with a recess 6 extending inwardly from one of the longitudinal side walls of the opening 5, the
order to arrange the bar 1 in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the bars 4: are first arranged in spaced parallel relation and the bar I inserted through the openings 5 and the recesses 2 being disposed in alinement with the side walls of the opening, so that the bar 1 may be readily turned up to the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The bar 7 is then inserted within the openings 5 and the connecting neck portions 3 thereof are arranged within the recesses 6, so that the upper face of the bar will lie flush with the lower wall of the openings 5. The bars 8 and 9 are then arranged in position upon the bar 7 and the three are then turned at right angles, the manner of turning being illustrated in Fig. 3, until they are disposed in an upright position, as illustrated in Fig. 4:. It will be apparent that it will take considerable skill to remove the bars from the openings 5 from their position illustrated in Fig. 4.
In order to remove the bars from the openings 5. the bars 7, 8 and 9 are moved be impossible to remove this bar in connection with the others, in view of the width of the same.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have Provided a simple and durable puzzle which consists of a plurality of interlocking bars so eonstructed as to form an exceedingly perplexing puzzle and Which will provide a severe test for'the ingenuity of one attempting to lock the bars together or remove the same from their locked position. It will also be apparent that the device can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost. It is to be understood that these bars may be made of any suitable material and any size whatsoever.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Havingthus described this invention, what I claim is l. A device of the class described including a plurality of interlocking bars formed in sets, each of the bars of one set including an elongated body having spaced recesses formed inwardly from each of the longitudinal edges of the body, the bars of the other set including an elongated body having a centrally-arranged elongated opening to receive the bars of the other set and further provided with a recess formed in one of the walls of said opening, whereby to IGCGlXQ the material between the recesses of the other bars and one of the first sets of bars being substantially Wider than the remaining bars of that set, as and for the purpose set forth.
A device of the class described including a plurality of interlocking bars formed in sets, the bars of one set including an elongated body having spaced recesses extending inwardly from each of the longitudinal edges of the body, the bars of the other set including an elongated body having a centrally arranged elongated opening I of a length suflicient to receive one of the bars of the first set in a vertical position and the remaining bars in a horizontal position, said bars being further provided with a recess communicating with one of the side 1 walls of the opening adapted to receive the material between the recesses in the first bars, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
