exact description, l
: room.
' 7 More particularly the invention 7 relates to rnEononncHARLEs nonnmilvr, on NE ORLEANS, Louisiana.
nooammma To'all'whomit mag concem: r Be it known that L Tnrononn (3. Donn- DANT,'2 I-C1t1ZeIl-Qf the United States, and a resident of New-Orleans, in'the parish of Orleansflandlstate of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Door-Fastener, of which the following isa full, clear,;and
I The invention relates to-a tempora ry. fas tenin deviceadapted for insertion between a-door and doorjamb, to fasten the door in position and from the inside of'a the closed a device of the indicated character having novelfeature's, including a shank provided with a lockingJhead shaped'at one side to i project into andbefaccommodated in the door lock adjacentgto the beveled end of theusual latch bolt, thehead atthe opposite side having a member to be'projected laterally r, into the usual hole in the strike plate on'the, jamb bythe turningoffthe device, there be ing a shoulderto. engage the strike plate.
On the shank of the device is a pivoted mem benadap'ted tofbe enteredbetween the door and jamb, to prevent surreptitious turning of thefdevice out of engagement with the strike-plate. p I V 1 "The novel features .of the invention will be further explained in the specific desQ P":
tion following Reference'is to behad to the accompany ing drawings forming a partof this specifi cation,'in which;similancharacters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. 1.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved fastener applied to a door and door jamb,
parts of which, withlock elements thereof, are shownin horizontal section; theafas tener device being engaged with the door only'p Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the fastener device after having been given a'partial turn to be engaged with both the door and jamb; Fig. 3 is a face view of a portion of the edge of the door, showing the improved fastener sideelevation, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking- Inthe drawings there is indicated a section of a doorA, a section of fa door jamb B, a portion of a mortise lock C in the door,
the latch boltof which is indicatedby the letter D, and the front face-plate of which isindicated by the letter a. On the door.
. Patented Sept. 22, 1914.
Application'filed October 16,1913. Serial No.795,487. r
jamb isindicatedthe usual strike plate E having the bolt opening 6,
My improved fastener comprisesa shank 10 on which ,is a head-designated generally by. the numeral 11 The forward end 12 of the head is'flat, ior essentially so, to lie when in the inner position, close against awall of the lock casing C. in the door, as indicated in FIgSJ. 1 and 2. From the front flat side12 rearwardly the head 11 is beveled in the 'direction of'the shank, as at 13,. and at said thehead or the sideopposite the flatfront 12, there 1S'ltfOIII16d-OI1 the head, or on the shank immediately adjacent to the .head, .a
projection 14:;the rear surface 15' of which presents a shoulder.
H V The dimensions and the shape of the'yheaduatthe' beveled portion aresuch that the device maybe so dis,-
beveled portion the'head is more or less rounded transversely. .At the rear end of posed that theheadwill extend into the i lock casing 0, through the faceplate thereof, across the space'between the door and the jamb andthrough the strike-plate Eon the j amb through theopening e -thereof, the
shaped space presented with the beveled end v of the latch Dewithin the lock casing. .The door maynow be closed withthe fastener device engaging the lockonly, as indicated in Fig.1. A turningmovement of the de- 1 vice on its 'axis through approximately. "will dispose the projections 14: on the portion 'ofthe head withinthe opening e of the strike plate, a part of the rounded and bevchad-portion; still being disposedin-the; look as shown in Fig, 2, the head, it will be seen, extends transversely across the space between the door and jamb, and interlocks with both of the latter, the bolt remaining in the retracted position and being substituted in its latching functions bythe head 11 Thus the head llfisiin the form of a crosshead disposed at one side of the shank,
the device being plane, or essentially so, at a face of the head, the turning of the device through 90? serving to 'presenttheplane sidecasing G adjacent tothe beveled end ofthe latch bolt. Inthis position of the fastener to the strike plate while inengagement with the lock elementsof the door, or to so dis;
pose the head as to engage both the 'door* and the strike plate.
In order to prevent the turning 'of the fas tener either by accident or surreptitiously, there is provided on the shank a securing member 16, in the form of a plate pivoted at V wedging action and jam the securing'device against the keyand the door, or ja1nb,'as the case may be. A second pivoted securing member l6 may be employed, of the general form of the element 16. Both are broadened from the rear pivoted ends to present broad- 'ened free ends, which advantageously, are rounded to facilitate entrance between the door and jainb. The element 1b has a bed, ily lateral curvature in "a direction away from the shank 10, in order t'o present a toclaim as new, and desire to secure by Lettail-effective width toper mitof its being yieldingly wedged orjammed between-a side of theshank 10 and the door or jamb,
"Having thus describedmyinvention, I
ters Patentz: i ,1. A door fastener-of the character described, comprising a shank having a. crosshead -disposed'at one side of the shank, onei side face of whichhead is plane, and-the opposite side face of which is beveled 'longi tudinally and curved transverselvg.
:2. A door fastener of the character described, comprising a shank having a crossheadidisposed at one side of the shank, one
, easiest: t is patent maybe ottamed ror 'five' am side face of which head is plane and the opposite side face of which is beveled lon -n tudinally at its rear sidegandcurved transversely, the-front of, the head being'esse'n tially flat, and there -bein a laterah rearwardly facing-shoulder at-the back of the head at one side. a
3.- A'jdoor' fastenerof the character described, comprising a shank having a fastener head, said device being adapted to on its longitudinal axis, anda securing member pivoted on the shank near the rear end, said securing device having a lug at a side thereof, deflected in a direction toward the shank and transverse to the'pivotal movement of the said securing member.
4:. A door fastener of, the character cl escribed, comprising gakshank having a ifas tener head, said devicebeing adapted; to turn on its. longitudinal axis, andfa securing plate pivoted on the shank, near the end ofthe latter, said plate having *lugsat opposite sidesxthereof, the lugs being curved in the direction of thefshankianditransverse to the direction of movement of 5. A door fastener" of the characterde: scribed, having ashan'k-pnovided at aforward portion thereof with a lateral fastenerzhe'ad, to hold the door inthe closed position, a pivoted member on the rearward of the fastener V head-, "said pivoted member having a laterally curved portion and adapted to be turned on its pivot -to;.a
for ward 'pjositionto vredgethesa-id member between the shank of a.;door or door 'jamb;
