v BATHING-SUIT.
, To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E; STREET, citizen of the United 'States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Suits, of which the following isa full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part'hereof.
My invention has relation to improve ments in bathing suits; and it consists in the novel construction of suit more fully set forth in" the specification and pointed out inthe claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the garment, partsbeing broken away; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is ahorizontal crosssection of the suit, on the line H of Fig. 1.
The present invention is particularly directed to bathing suits for women (though not restricted thereto) and has for. its object to provide a one-piece garment or suit which naybe quickly put on and fastened, and as quickly taken off on'e'provided with means for imparting buoyancy to the garmentbya retentionof a certain amount of air; one in WlllClT suitable panels .are substituted for the conventional skirt,'thereby reducing the weight of thezgarment and one possessing further and other features the advantages of which 'will be readily ap-- parent from a detailed description of the invention which is as follows:
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the blouse of'the garment and 2 the con- -ventional ,bloomer members or trousers which may be of any desired-length, a suitable waist band 3 being provided between the base of the blouse andthetop of the trousers. The a blouse provided with sleeves 4 which are shortened to reach above the elbow, although the length ofthe sleeves may be varied, said sleeve being provided a with a slit 8 in the. back for the comfort and free movements of the arms of the bather or swimmer. The garment is quickly fastened by means of any conventional forms of fastening devices such as glove or shoe, fasteners, comprising female or socket members a on the outside of thewaist-band which are engaged by studs or male members b on the inside of the waist-band, the number and disposition of the fastening devices be- 1 Specification of Letters Patent. Application fl l ed February 28, 1914.
garment, reduce the weight of of the blouse is a Serial No. 821,747.
ing such that thegarment may be adjusted to any desired fit about bather.
Depending from the bottom edge the 6e Patented Sept. 22, 1914.. i
the waist of the a waist-band '3, atthe front and back, and covering the splitbetween the trouser or" bloomer sections 2, 2, are panels 5, which,
whileimparting a skirt-like efl'ect tothe a decided advantage over a fullskirt. These panels preferably reach down to the bottom of the bloomers, although I do not wish to restrict myself to any precise length of panel. Disposed on the inside of the back yoke or layer 6 extending the garment,
cross-wise from one arm-hole O to the other,
the lower edge of the yoke occupying a posi tion across the back substantially between the upper edge of the waist-band and the The lower edge.-
bottoms of the arm-holes. of the yoke is free or loose from the back of the blouse, thus forming with said back i an air sack or chamber C-in which the air is retained for a considerable length of time, the confined air rendering the garment exceedingly bouyant and serving a purpose akin to a pneumatic life-preserver. In practice, the sack inflates more or less, the wet garment preventing leakage of the air through the meshes thereof (see dotted showing in Fig. 3). To insure the air retention however, the back of the blouse and the yoke 6 may be made ofmaterial practically impervious to air, in which event a permanent bouyancy can be imparted to the ment. t a p From the foregoing, it will be seen that the various advantages enumerated at the outset, are :present, the garment fulfilling the several objects contemplated by the invention. 'The garment may obviously be garchanged in minor details without departing from the general nature or spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim is 1. A one-piece bathing suit comprising a blouse, a waist-band and trousers, front and back panels denendingfroni the lower portion of the waist-band and covering the split betweenthe trouser members, and fastening means .on the waist-band.)
2. A one-piece bathing suit comprising a blouse, sleeves therefor provided with slits in the back, a waist-band and trouser members, front and back panels depending from vtrouser members, and an air sack on the back of the blouse.
back skirt panels depending from the Waist 4. Alone-piece bathing suit comprising a b10use,--a walst-band and trousers, front and ;band and'operating to cover the split between the trouser members, fastening means onthe waist-band, a yoke-plece secured-to the inside of the back of blouse between .the arm holes anduextending to a point intermediate'the' bottoms of the" arm-holes and thelupper edge of the waist-band, the lower edge of the yoke being free fro-mthe back of the blouse; whereby an open air -sack is formed between the yoke and blouse, and i sleeves onthe-blouse-whaving rear slits, as
set. forth.
- In testimony whereof my sigma -25 tunefin presence of twoWitriesses.
