EMIL R. YOUNG, OF JORDAN, MINNESOTQ.
MECHANICAL Specification of Letters Patent; Sept. 1,1914.
Application filed December 13, 1913 Serial No. 806,627.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL R. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jordan, in the county of Scott and State of Minnesota, have invented new and "useful lmprovem ents in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved mechanical toy providing a moving figure representing a rabbit, in a hollow stump and two other figures one representing a hunter and the other a dog endeavoring, the one to strike the rabbit with a stick and the other to grab the rabbit, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a vertical sectional view of a mechanical toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is partly a plan and partly a horizontal sectional view of the same. Figs. 3'and 4: are detail sections on the lines ac and b-b, respectively, of Fig. 1.
A base'casing 1 has a platform 2 provided with a central opening 3 and a representation of a hollow stump 4: around said opening. The stump has oppositely arranged openings 5 and 6. The platform also has oppositely arranged openings 7 and 8. A shaft 9 is mounted in the center of the casing and stump and has a master gear 10 loose thereon and arranged just below the stump and forming the bottom thereof. A figure as of a rabbit 11 is mounted on the master gear for movement therewith around in the stump. The shaft has a coiled spring 12 wound thereon and one end of the spring is attached to the master gear. A ratchet wheel 13 is fastened to the shaft and is engaged by a spring pressed pawl 14 carried by the master gear. The lower end of the shaft may be engaged by a key to enable the spring to be wound, thespring when unwinding serving 'to rotate the master gear as will be understood. A secondary gear 15 is motmted on a suitable axle 16 and arranged under the opening 7 and to engage the master gear. This gear 15 has a toothless segment 18 to permit the master gear to turn to a certain extent independently thereof and also has a tappet pin 19 which is engaged by a tappet arm 20 of the master ear so that after the master gear makes a partial rotation independently of the secand ondary gear said pin and arm reengage the secondary gear with the master gear.
figure 21 as of a dog has its body pivoted to hind legs and front legs and has a weight.- ed head and a liexible tail. The legs are also pivotally mounted on the platform, the front legs having a downwardly extending tappet arm 21- which projects through the opening 7. This figure is arranged opposite the opening 5 and is adapted to move toward and from said opening. The weighted head throws the figure forwardly by gravity and the secondary gear 15 has a tappet element which by engagement with the tappetarm 21 of the front feet moves the dog back just before the gear 15 stops. A. similar secondary gear 23 is arranged for rotation on an axle 2st and under the opening 8 and has a toothless segment 25 and a tappet pin 26, the latter being adapted also to be engaged by the tapp'et arm 20 so that the gear 15 will be turning when the gear 23 is at rest. A figure 27 representing a man in a recumbent position is arranged opposite the opening 6 and has a DIVOtQCl'zHID. 28 which carries a stick 29. This arm also has a tappet 30 whiehmay be" engaged by a tappet 81 of thegear23. A
W hen the toy is in operation the rabbit being carried around by the master gear 10 appears;successively opposite the openings 5 The figure of the dog and "the weighted arm of the man or hunter move downwardly and forwardly by gravity toward the openings. The secondary gears are so timed with respect to the master gear that their tappets engage the tappets of the figures and move the latter from the openings immediately after the figure of the rabbit appears at the opening so that the toy makes it appear that the dog and the man make ineffectual efforts to get at the rabbit, owing to the fact that the secondary gears lag for an instant after each rotation while the master gear revolves continuously.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a toy the combination of a master gear, having a tappet arm, a figure carried by said gear, a secondary gear for engagement by the master gear and having a toothless segment to permit partial independent rotation of the master gear and also having a tappet pin for engagement by the tappet arm of the master gear to cause the 'secvrality of secondary gears for engagement by the master gear and each having a toothless segment and also havlng a tappet pin for en gagement by the tappet arm of the master gears and a plurality of figures each having a moving part, and means to cause the secondary gears to actuate the moving parts of the last-named figures.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0t two Witnesses.
