PATENT OFFICE.
MECHANICAL TOY.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,409, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed November I4, 1902. Serial No. 131,366. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsrAv W. MACRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Toys, (Case No. 1,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Specification.
My invention relates to mechanical toys, and particularly to a class of toys in which it is intended to illustrate in pantomime the movements of human figures.
A preferred embodiment of my invention consists in the provision of a pair of figures mounted upon a suitable base, each of which is jointed at the waist. Means are provided whereby the figures may be operated to address each other, as in the act of salutation or greeting.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Where I have shown a base portion l, upon which are mounted the figures A and B, the first of which is shown suitably attired. The other is disrobed to illustrate the mechanical features employed in the operation thereof.
Each figure is provided with a pair of legs 2 2 and a part 3, forming the bust or trunk of the figure. To each of the said bust portions is attached a head 4, which may be provided with a hat 5. The arms G 6 may be pivotally attached to the bust portion 3, as shown. The legs and the trunk portion 3 are desirably connected by a dat spring 7. However, it will be apparent that a helical coiled spring might advantageously be employed for this purpose. An actuating-string Sis run through the base l and up the front of the iigure, where it is attached to the front of the trunk portion 3, as shown. By exerting a downward pull upon the string 8 the trunk portion 3 and the head and arms connected therewith are moved forward and downward, as in the act of bowing. By a suitable manipulation of the strings connected with the figures they may be made to salute each other and to simulate various antics calculated to amuse and entertain.
It is immaterial to the spirit of my invention in what way the figures are attired or what characters they are intended to represent. A desirable embodiment of my inven-A tion, however, contemplates the provision of iigures intended to represent Alphonse and Gaston, as frequently illustrated in comic newspapersupplements. Othermeans might desirably be employed for the purpose of causing the actuation of the figures, and while I have shown one preferred embodiment of my invention many modifications thereof which come within the spirit of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise disclosure herein described; but,
Having described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a mechanical toy, the combination with a mounting-block l, ot' mechanical figures dressed as human beings mounted at either end thereof and facing each other, each of said figures consisting of a leg portion 2 rigidly secured to said mounting-block l, a body portion 3 having a head 4, a flexible leafspring 7 interposed between said body and said leg portion, and a string secured to the front of said body portion and passing downwardly alongside of the leg portion through an opening in said mounting-block, a pull upon said string causing the body portion of said figure to move forward and downward as if bowing to the figure disposed at the other end of said mounting-block, a release of said string allowing said body portion to return to its normal position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 6th day of November, A. D. 1902.
GUSTAV W. MACKO.
