TQ all whom t may concern l Be it Aknown that I, BENJMIN F. HIG- erNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Christopher, in the county of Franklin and State 'of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inLocks, of ywhichthe following is a specification, referencev beinghad'to the accompanying draw-y ings. Y n
This invention relates toA new and luseful improvements in` locks and more particularly to a door lock, the main object of the inven.- tion being the provision of ya lock wherein the locking bolt is connectedfto the knob spindle, in such a manner ythat the bolt cannot be turned from the outside, without the 'Another object of the present invention the provision of a lock of this character which will possess advantages in points of eiliciency and durability, is inexpensive` to manufacture and, at the same time, is ,in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangesimple i ment of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the" accompanying drawing forming ya part of this application, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line f5- 3, llig. 2; and Fig. lis a front elevation oi the door plate.
In carryingout my invention, l provide the door, to which the lock is to be applied, provided with the transverse opening and a longitudinal opening communicating with the transverse opening. This longitudinal opening has a casing indicated by the numeral 1 which is preferably circular in form and mounted therein, is the sliding bolt 2, said bolt being retained in its projected position by means of the coil spring 3, said coil spring encircling the bolt and having one end secured thereto and the other end secured to thevcasing. Secured to the front edge of the door, is a plate 4:, which is provided with a central opening through which the ,1 bolt 2 projects, the plate forming a guide for Speccationof Letters'Patent. f y 1.1331515911tedSQp',` 1331914. i Application led February 26, 1914t f SMVNOTSQLQSL i n n y thereof," with kvthe knobs the I numerals 6 rand `7, the knob 6 being liXed to the spindlein a ymannerwhich willjbe herematterandmoreifully seti' forth, while the knob 7 rotates independently thereof. IA
slidably mounted within the groove 9 formed inthe spindle, the outer ,endv of jsaid "wedge member being disposed at right angles, indicated at 10L and.y extends vout through an opening formed ,inftheisleeve 11, whichl is rcarried .by-f the knob6, whereby turning movement of theknob will rotate the spindlei Thewouter end `ofthe-spindle is provided knob 6 is a fixed to the spindle 5throughthe y medium of the; .wedge member 8 lwhich is;
witlif' a' Isubstantially triangularly shaped groove 12wh1ch is adapted to correspond rw'ithaJ similarlyshaped groove formed in the'j'inner wall .of thek opening 13 in the knob 7 so that when the two grooves are j within the slotted end 17 of the bolt 2, so
that upon` the rotation of the spindle, the bolt 2 will bey retracted, in order to open the door.
lt willbe noted that by having'the knob 7 loosely mounted upon the outer end of thel spindle 5, the saine may be rotated, without imparting rotary movement to the spindle and, in order to retract the bolt 2, the key 14 must be first inserted within the register- y ing openings 12 and 13 to connect the spindle and knob, lso that rotary movement may be readily imparted to the spindle. It will also be kapparent that by connecting the spindle 5- with the knob 6, through the medium of the wedge member S, the bolt 2 may be readily retracted from theinner side of the door at all times.
From` the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable door lock wherein the. necessity of providing aseparate connection with the locking bolt is eliminated, andi ther locking bolt is directly-connected with lthe knob spindle so that the doorlinay be readily unlocked by the rotation of the lmob, it being necessary to insert a key within the knob When unlocking the door from the outside. It will also be apparent that my device is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively loW cost.
preferred form of my invention, it Will be obvious that various changes in thedetails of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, Without sacriiicing any of `the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim. c
Having thus described this invention, What Isclaim is 4 A device of the class described including a casing, a locking bolt movable therein having its inner end reduced and provided With an elongated slot, a coil spring mounted upon said reducedxend and having vone end secured to the casing and the other end bearing against the shoulder formed by the reduced end, whereby the locking bolt is lnormally retained in its projected position, a
knob spindle, a knob mounted upon one end for rotation with the spindle, a second knob loosely mounted upon the other end and provided with a central opening eX- v y tending entirely through the knob, said While I have shown and described the spindle having' a triangular recess and said knob having a triangular recess adapted to be arranged 1n opposed relation vwith the recess on the spindle to form a rectangular' bore, a key member adapted to be inserted Within said bore, whereby to rotate thel spindle With the rotation of the knob, and a pin carried by the spindle and adapted to be disposed Within the slot in the locking bolt, whereby upon the rotation of the knob spindle, the locking bolt Will be retracted against the tension of the coil spring. y
In testimony whereof I hereunto aitix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
