NUT AND PIPE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1914.
Application filed July 31, 1913. Serial No. 782,344.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J'. HANRA- HAN, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Rupert, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a' .new and useful Nut and Pipe Wrench, of
which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to wrenches, and aims primarily to-provide a novel and improved nut and pipe wrench It is the object of .the present invention to provide a device of the character indi catedwhich may ordinarily be employed as a nut .wrench!- or common wrench, and which may be readily converted into a pipe wrench.
Another object .of the present invention .-is to provide awrench, the jaws of which are unencumbered so as to be capable of grasping nutsand other objects, pipe gripping'members being applicable to the shank or stock of the wrench 'so as to cooperate with the respect ve aws for engaglng the is to provide novel and improved means for quickly adjusting the 'movable jaw.
It' is also within the scope of the present invention to provide a combination wrench of the character indicated which shallbe simple, light, durable, substantial, and inexpensive in construction, as well as servioeable, convenient and eflicient in its use.
With the foregoing. general objects out;
lined and with other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details .of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changesin the precise embodiment of.
the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope ofwhatis claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodimentin the accompanying drawing, wherein j J Figure, l is a side elevation of the improved .[wrench illustrating the pipe gripping members applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. F igs. 3' and 4 are sectional views taken on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fi 5 is a perspective view of one'of the pipe gripping members. Fig.
- 6 is a perspective view of the other pipe gripping member.
In carrying out the invention, reference being had in detail to the drawing, there is provided a suitable metallic stock or shank l-having the stationary jaw 2 at its outer end, and having its other end offset, as at 3, to provide a handle. The shank or stock '1 is provided with the dove-tailed tongue 4 extending from the stationary jaw 2 to the offset portion, the said tongue being provided witha series of transverse notches I 5 extending from the inner end of the tongue to a point shortof the outer end.
A slide 6 is movably carried by the stock, the slide being provided with adove-tailed groove or channel 7 engaging the tongue 4. The slide 6 is provided with an angular extension 8 at its outer end forming the movable jaw, which is adapted to ordinarily cooperate with the stationary jaw 2'for grasping 'nuts -and other angular objects. The faces of the jaws 2 and 8 are fiat and smooth and are disposed at right angles to the stock in order that the jaws may en-' gage various objects without dilficulty.
In order to lock the slide 6 and movable jaw in any adjusted position, a latch or plate 9 is carriedby the slide 6, the said latch or plate 6 Testing against that face of the slide v6 remote from the stock 1 and having its outer end engaging loosely over the'pin 10 carried by the. slide 6 adjoining the jaw 8. The other or. inner end of the latch or plate 9 is bent angularlyover the inner end of the slide 6, in order to engage the respective notches 5. A thumb screw 12 is passed loosely through the latch 9 adjoining its inner end and-is threaded into the slide 6 to press the angular end. 11 of the latch into engagement with the notches 5, while a coiled wire compressionsprmg is seated in a socket 14 provided in the slide 6 intermediate the screw 12 and pin 10,"
so as to press the latch 9 outwardly or out of engagement with the notches 5. It will thus be evident that when the screw 12 is tightened, the end 11 of the latch will be maintained in engagement with the respective notch- 5, and when the screw is loosened. the spring 13 will throw the latch out of engagement with the notches 5. Thepin 10 serves to prevent the latch from swinging sidewise u on the screw'l2 as a pivot. When the'latc 9 isrelea'sed, it will be wident that the slide may be withdrawn from the tongue 4.
The pipe gripping attachments or members embody a block 15 having the dove tailed groove 16 at one end adapted to engage the tongue 4, and a block 17 having the dove-tailed groove 18 at one end adapted to engage the Said-tongue. The blocks or members 15 and 17 are interchangeable and are preferably similar in contour to there- 'spective jaws 2 and 8, and have their remote faces flat so as to rest snugly against the faces of the jaws, the other or adjacent faces of the blocks 15 and 17 being preferably inclined, so as to diverge away from the stock 1. The'outer or exposed face of the block 15 is preferably' toothed so as to bite the pipe. or other stock, while the outer or exposed face of the block 17 is smooth and provided with the longitudinal dove-tailed groove 19 extending from the stock, a supplemental block or pipe engaging member 20 being movable along the face of the block 17 and the supplemental block 20 having a dovetailed tongue 21 working within the groove 19 of the block 17. The face of the supplemental block 20 is preferably toothed so as to bite the'pipe or other stock.
In use, when the members 15 and 17 are detached from the stock, the jaws 2 and 8 are adapted to cooperate for grasping nuts or other articles, it being observed that the movable jaw 8 may be readily adjusted by loosening the thumb screw 12, and maybe secured in position by tightening the said screw. The offset handle 3 permits the hand. of the operator to grasp the same, without being engaged-by the slide 6 when the same is moved downwardly or inwardly.
l/Vhen it is desired to convert the device into a pipe wrench, the slide6 is removed, by withdrawing it from the inner end of the tongue 4, the thumb screw 12 having been loosened, which will permit the members 15 and 17 to be applied to the stock. In applying the members 15 and 17 t0 the stock, the dove- tailed grooves 16 and 18 of the' respective members 15 and 17 are engaged over the inner end of the tongue 4, and the slideG is then applied to the said tongue. The member 15 is slid against the stationary jaw 2 while the movable jaw 8 is slid against the member 17, the member 17 being slid to the required position by the adjustment of the slide. The toothed pipe gripping member 20 adapted to slide longitudinally of the member 17 the pipe being adapted to be grasped between the toothed faces of the members 15 and 20 in order' that when the handle is swung, the member 20 in engaging or biting the pipe, will be slid inwardly, so that the pipe may be-more tightly gripped, as will be apparent. In this manner, the de-' use may serve especially as a pipe wrench,
it being observed that the members 15 and 17 are readily attachable to and removable from the stock.
It is to be observed that the jaws 2 and 8 are not encumbered, in orderthat they may readily grasp nuts and other objects, and it is also to, be observed that the pipe gripping attachments are simple, they being readily carried in the vest pocket or the like. The other advantages and capabilities of the present device will be apparent from the foregoing taken in connection with the drawmg.
WVhat is claimed as new is 1. In a wrench, a stock having a jaw at one end, a removable aw slidably engaging.
