I. W. TEAGUE.
OIL CAN.
APPLIOATION I'ILEIJ APR. 12. 1913.

THE NORRIS PETERS CO. PHOTD-LITHQ. WASHINCTUN, D C.
UNITED OFFICE JOSEPH W. TEAGUE, 0F SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
OIL-CAN.
To all whom it may concern:
a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil cans, and has for its object to provide a device of the above character which is adapted to be used for oiling large surfaces, tools, etc., as well as the ordinary uses to which an oil can may be put.
In the construction of my improved device I provide an absorbing member upon which the oil is adapted to be dropped, and the member then rubbed over the surface that is to be oiled.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which will have such a surface oiling member so arranged that the same may be carried within a pocket formed in the oil can, so that at all times the device will be ready for use.
With the above and other objects in view I will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of my improved oil can, showing the surface oiling member .in place in the base of the can; and Fig. 2 isa view of the surface oiling member as it would appear when removed, and showing the oil can in position for placing oil on to the absorbing material.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 5 indicates the body portion of an oil can'of the usual construction. This body portion is preferably composed of the cylindrical side wall 6, the dome shaped top 7 carrying a screw threaded collar 8, which is adapted to be engaged by the screw threaded sleeve 9 of the spout 10.
The bottom 11 of the oil can is preferably spaced substantially one-half the distance up the length ofthe sides, and thereby pro- .vides a depending flange 12 which, in com- Specification of Letters Patent. application filed April 12', 1913. Serial No. 760,785.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
forms a receptacle which is adapted to re- Be it known that I, JOSEPH -W. TEAGUE,
ceive the surface oiling member 13. This surface oiling member 13 preferably comprises the cylindrical side walls 14 and the bottom 1-5, which is extended, as clearly shown at 16, and its outer edges bent up to form the upstanding flange 17, which is adapted to form a seat for the lower terminal of the wall 12, and also to act as a receptacle for overflowing oil which may run off the top of the surface oiling member. A
suitable absorbing material 18 is preferably provided and is adapted to be held firmly in the receptacle 13 formed by the wall 14 and the bottom 15.
Adjacent the upper extremity of the wall 14 I preferably provide a circumferential rib 19 which extends outwardly from said wall and is adapted to seat in a recess 20 formed in the wall 12 of the oil can. It will be seen that in this manner I provide a means whereby the surface oiling member is held rigidly in the bottom of the oil can and cannot be removed except as theuser so desires.
In use, when it is desired to oil the surface of a table, tools, and the like, the surface oiling member is removed from its position within the receptacle formed in the base of the oil can, and the same placed so that the absorbing material will be upward. The oil can is then inverted and the liquid contained therein will flow downwardly through the spout and on to the absorbing material, and it will be seen that in this .manner such devices as mentioned above ing a cylindrical body portion, a cover and a spout, a bottom spaced from the lower extremity of the cylindrical body portion, a rib formed adjacent the bottom and intermediate the lower extremity of the cylindrical body portion, a Surface oiling member rial being adapted to retain oil when the decomprising {L cylindrical body portion and v ce is in operation. 1 v 10 um e en n f ed n the e ge .0 l tesbillwnyWl w 'lafl i my Signature the bottom, a flange secured to the extension, in presence of two Witnesses.
said flange being spaced from the side Wall JOSEPH \V. TEAGUE.
to form a receptacle to receive overflowing W'itnessesi oil, an absorbent material secured Within the W. R. WVISE,
surface oiling member, said absorbent mat-e- BERT EKKER.
