ALFRED PEKKALA, 0F HIBBING, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED PEKKALA, a citizen of Finland, residing! at Hibbing, in the county of St. Louis'and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new andiuseful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do oleclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly the class known as monkey wrenches, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character wherein a construction is setforth to enable very delicate adjustments to be made. IStill another object of the invention resides in providing a wrench which is provided with a nut coperating with loc-king bars to retain said justed position.
Still another object is to provide a device which is simple and :durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which is very efficient and useful in operation. Y
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination. and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specication and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application: Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal sect-ion therethrough, showingthe locking bars in their effective engaging positions. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. t is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing the loc-king bars in their ineffective or disengaged position. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section as seen on line 5 5 of Fig. il. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line 7*'7, Fig. l.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a shank the upper end of which is enlarged to provide a head for the formamovable jaw in any adtion of a stationary joint indicated at 2 and slidably mounted on this shank 1 is a hous- Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 20, 1914. Serial No. 833,253.
Iing 3 the 'outer end of which is also enlarged lto form what will be termed a movable aw tfor coperation with the'stationary jaw 3. The ends of this housing 3. are designed to fit snugly against the side edges of the shank l whereby to guide said housing in its sliding movement on said shank but the intermediate portion'of the housing between the side edges of the shank and the side edges of the housing do not contactwith the shank so that channelways 5 are provided therebetween. These channel ways taper greater towardtheir inner ends and are designed for a purpose to be hereinafter and more particularly set forth.
The side edges of the shank l are provided with ratchet teeth or the like 6 for a portion of their length land mounted for oscillation in the channel ways 5 are the locking bars 7 which are also provided with ratchet. teeth 8f for coperation with the teeth 6 above referred to. These teeth 8 eX- tend for. but a portion of the length of the bars 7 andthe extreme outer ends of said bars are reduced as shown at 9.
Mountedwithin the housing 3 at the inner end thereof is a member 10 which will be termed a nut the same projecting through openings l1 in the side faces of said housing. This nut 10 has the outer peripheral edge thereof provided with a pair of cam slots 13 and these slots 13 receive therein the reduced inner ends 9 of the bars 7. In view of the particular arrangement of these slots 13 it will be seen that upon the rotation of the nut l0 in one direction said locking bars 7 will be directed inwardly toward the side edges of the shank to permit the teeth 3 of said locking bars to be engaged with the teeth 6 of the shank, thus retaining the housing with the movable jaw 4 thereon in any adjusted position. When said nut is properly rotated in the opposite direction, however, these locking bars 7 will be directed outwardly and thus release the engagement of the ratchet teeth 6 and 8 and permit the housing 3 to be moved longitudinally on the shank l. In this manner the housing with the movable jaw thereon may be moved in any position on the shank and quickly and readily locked in such position. It is obvious, therefore, that veryv fine and delicate adjustments may be made with this particular wrench.
The one face of the housing 3 is removable and thus the various operating parts of the device may be readily applied and removed when desired. Should, for any reason whatsoever these parts become injured or it is desired for any other reason to substitute other parts therefor the face may be readily removed and these locking bars and the adjusting nut entirely removed from the housing.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the object of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the function set forth, it is obvious that various chai'iges in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank having` a jaw at one end and provided with ratchet teeth onthe side edges thereof, a housing slidably mounted on said shank and also provided with a jaw at one end cooperating with the first mentioned jaw, said housing providing channel ways between portions of the shank and portions of the side edges of said housing, locking bars mounted for oscillation in the aforesaid channel ways of said housing and adapted for engagement with the teeth on said shank, the inner ends of said locking bars being reduced in thickness, and a nut mounted for rotation in said housing and projecting therebeyond, the outer peripheral edge of said nut being provided with a pair of cam slots receiving the reduced inner ends of said locking,` bars therein, whereby to oscillate said locking bars as the nut is partially rotated in the housing.
2. A wrench of the class described comprising a shank having a jaw at one end and provided with ratchet teeth on the side edges thereof, a housing slidably mounted on said shank and also provided with a jaw at one end coperating with the first mentioned jaw, said housing flaring outwardly toward its inner end and provided with channel-ways between the portions of the shank and side edges of said housing which also flare outwardly toward the inner ends thereof, locking bars mounted for oscillation in said flaring channel-ways, the inner ends of said locking bars being reduced in 'thickness and a nut mounted for rotation in said housing and projecting beyond the side edges thereof, the outer peripheral edge of said nut being provided with a pair of cam slots to receive the reduced inner ends of said locking bars therein, whereby to oscillate said bars as the nut is partially rotated in the housing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
