To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. WILDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monkey-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The general objects of this invention are to refine the construction of wrenches in point of simplicity of construction and in cheapness of manufacture; and further, to provide a wrench which may be readily adjusted to desired positions with a minimum of operation. And to these ends the invention consists of a wrench having a shank provided with a series of perforations and a movable jaw mounted on the shank, and provided with a series of perforations adapt-- ed to be in transverse alinement with first named perforations and a spring clip having a pin adapted to be fitted in alining perforations for locking the jaws in relative position.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a speci- 1cation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is an edge view having portions broken away for the purpose of clearness. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-8 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the locking-member.
As shown in the drawings the wrench a is formed of the shank 5 having a stationary jaw 6 at one end thereof, a movable jaw 7 mounted on the shank and a locking member 8 arranged on the wrench so as to lock the jaws in a relative fixed position.
The wrench may be made of any suitable material such as steel or the like and may be made of any size desired. At one end thereof, the shank 5 is provided with the angular portion 6 which has its inner edge 9 substantially at right angles to the shank as shown, thus operating as the stationary jaw of the wrench. The shank is also provided with a series of spaced perforations 10 which are in longitudinal alinement on the shank and are located adjacent to theedge remote from the jaw 6 as shown; the function of these perforations will be hereinafter explained.
The movable jaw 7 may be made of similar material to shank and provided with a central longitudinal bore or slot 11 by means of which the jaw 7 is slidably mounted on the shank 5. The jaw 7 is also provided adjacent to the slot 11 with the transverse perforations 12 which are arranged in longitudinal alinement and are so positioned as to be adapted for transverse alinement with the perforations in the shank; and upon inserting the pin 13 of the locking member 8 within the transversely alining perforations the jaws of the wrench will be locked in fixed relative position.
The locking member 8 is preferably formed of a resilient material such as spring steel or the like and is provided at one end with the laterally extending pin 13 and at its other end with the clip 14 which is formed integral with the locking member and is offset as indicated at 15. Thus it will be seen that the pin 13 may be inserted in coinciding perforations and by straddling the clip 14 over the edge of the shank, the jaws will be substantially locked in the desired position, as shown;
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 2 that all the perforations do not aline transversely, but are so arranged that the perforations in the movable jaw 7 are spaced at smaller intervals than those provided in the shank. Therefore, it will be seen that fine adjustment may be had upon bringing any two openings into alinement transversely.
What I claim as new is.
A wrench comprising a shank having an angularly disposed jaw at one end thereof and provided with a series of spaced perforations arranged longitudinally on the shank and located adjacent to one edge thereof, a movable jaw mounted on the shank and provided with a series of transverse perforations adapted to be alined with the perforations of the shank, and a resilient locking member having a pin adapted to be inserted in the alining perforations and having a clip for straddling the edge of the shank substantially as described.
