WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX P. BIRAND, J r., a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Mortlach, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present'invention relates to improvements in the construction of wrenches of the type including a fixed jaw anda movable jaw adapted for adjustable relation thereto.
The principal object of the invention is the production of means whereby the movable jaw may be readily and conveniently adjusted relative to the fixed jaw and locked in such adjusted position.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the followingspecification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 .of Fig. l, and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The Wrench includes a fixed jaw 1 having a shank 2 provided with a handle 3. Arranged upon the handle 2 is the carriage 4 of a movable jaw 5. The shank 2 has one of its edges toothed, as at 6, and one of the longitudinal walls of the bore of the carriage 4 is provided 7, which are adapted to co-act with the teeth 6. The carriage a has its portion extending beyond the non-toothed or smooth edge of the shank 2 provided with a transverse slot 8 and the outer wall of the said slot is rounded, the slot communicating with the referred to straight edge of the shank. Passing through ber 9 which is in the nature of an eccentric, the same gradually decreasing in thickness from one of the ends thereof to the opposite end forming the same witha thickened cam surface 10, and when this cam surface is with transverse teeth the slot 8 is a ring mem brought to engage with the referred to edge of the shank 2 the same will move the carriage transversely of the shank to bring the teeth 7 in the bore thereof to engage with the teeth 6 of the shank, and consequently lock the movable jaw upon the shank of the stationary jaw. The outer periphery of the cam ring 9 is preferably milled to facilitate the actuation or operation thereof.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: i
1. The combination with a wrench including a stationary jaw having a shank and a movable jaw having a carriage provided with a bore receiving the shank, said carriage opposite the jaw having a transverse slot defining a straight inner wall and a rounded outer wall, and the said slot communicating with the bore of the carriage, a
ring member arranged in the slot and having its inner periphery contacting with the roundedwall provided by the slot, said ring having its outer periphery gradually extended outwardly whereby to increase the cross sectional diameter thereof and to provide a cam surface that is adapted to contact with one of the edges of the shank, and by virtue of such contact to force the shank into contact with one of the walls of the bore of the carriage.
2. In combination with a wrench including a stationary jaw having a shank provided with teeth upon one of the edges thereof, and a movable jaw including a carriage having a bore to receive the shank and one of the walls of the said borebeing provided with teeth to co-act with the teeth of the shank, said carriage having a transverse slot defining an inner straight wall and an outer rounded wall and said slot communicating with the bore of the carriage, a milled ring loosely arranged in the slot and adapted to have itsinner eriphery contacting with the outer roan ed wall provided by the said slot, said ring being gradually virtue of such contact force the shank iatincreased in thickness from one of the ends erally of the carriage to bring the teeth of to the opposite end thereof upon its outer the said shank into engagement With. the 10 periphery, whereby to provide the said outer teeth in the bore of the carriage.
5 surface of the ring With a cam member, and In testimony whereof I aflix signathe said cam member designed to contact ture. With the smooth edge of the shank and by FELIX'P. BIRAND, JR.
