Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application filed April 9, 1914. Serial No. 830,743.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAROLD R. BIRDSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Calendar; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to calendars of the type adapted to be used re-.
peatedly, year after year, but is not restricted to'such use, as it may be used in any connection for which it is adapted or appropriate.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for supporting or suspending the several cards of a'calendar 1n exposed position, one
'in front of another,'in proper order, and
to permit such cards to be successively moved to a different position, without turn-- ing, whereby to expose the next card in order.
It is also the objectof my invention to provide means for holding a plurality of cards in either one of two positions and for guiding the sliding movements of the cards in proper order, from one position to the other, each card, as it is shifted-from one pack or position to the other, moving from the front of one pack to the rear of the other, or vice versa; or in other words, each card, when shifted, stands in reverse position with respect to the pack to which shifted to the position which it bore with respect to the other pack.
The invention is fully described in the.
following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calendar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof with the cards partly in full, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the-device illustrating the manner in which the cards of one pack are moved to the rear of the cards of the other pack when being shifted from one position to another.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a back plate or bodymember, which'may be of sheet metal or other suitable material, and 2 a plurality of members which are secured to said plate and serve to suspend a plurality of cards 3 in either of two positions'relative to the plate and to guide the movements of the cards from one to the other of such positions.
The plate 1 is intended to be vertically suspended and the members 2 are disposed lengthwise or vertically thereof, being secured to the plate at their upper and lower ends in any suitable manner, as hereinafter described. The members 2 are preferably made of spring strap metal, and each is provided at or adjacent to its upper end with -a loop 41, which extends outwardly from the plate and has its leg portions vertically spaced, with the lower leg 45* thereof forming a substantially horizontal ledge for supporting the cards 3 in raised position with relation to the plate. The ledge or lower leg portion a of the loop 4: has its free end portion in yielding contact with the plate l and thence extends downward in preferably slightly outwardly inclined relation to the plate 1, as shown at 5, the incline beingpreferably increased near the lower endof the member, as at 6, and finally terminating in the abrupt inwardly turned.
. by providing the upper leg portion 49 of the loop 4: at its inner or free end with an upstanding lip 10 which is projected through a registering opening 11 in the plate and engages the rear side of the plate at the upper end of the opening. The opening 11 is of substantially the same depth as the lip 10 to enable the lip to be projected therethrough when the legs 4 and 4 of the loop are rela tively compressed for such purpose, the spring action of the loop normally retaining V i lmportant, as the number of gulde members the legs .in outwardly sprung relation, as shown 1n Flg. 2.
The cards 3, in the present instance, are
shown as being arranged in three sets a, b
and 0, disposed side by side, the cards in the set (4 preferably being twelve in number, and
each bearing the name of a different month, the cards inthe set 6 preferably being thirty-one in number, and bearing in consecutive order numbers representing the days of the month, one'being provided on each card, and the; cards in the set 0, preferably being seven in number, and each bearing the name of a different day of the week. The cards of the'set b, in the present instance, are carried by two guide members, while each of the other sets a and a, being of less width than the cards 72, is carried by a single guide member 2. It will beunderstood, however, that this arrangement is not suspending position on the ledge 4 of themember. The upper end of the guide portion 56, which, connects thecard suspending ledges 45* and 7, has a yielding'spring pressure against the plate 1 to prevent a card from accidentally moving'downward from the ledge 4. If the shifted card of a set is not the first one in order the guide member 2 will guide it to the rear of the cards previously shifted so that the shifted "card stands in reverse position with respect 7 to the pack to which shifted to the position which it bore with respect to the cards from which it was shifted.
When it is desired to return the cards from their upper to their lower position the upper ends of'the guide membersare disengaged from the plate 1 so as to releasethe pressureof the inner end of the ledge-4 against the plate to facilitate a lowering of the cards. v a
In order that the cards may be hidden from view when shifted from display position a box or cover member 13, having an open bottom, is secured to the upper portion of the plate 1 in position to cover the cards when in their upper positions, as shown. The box member 13 is preferably hinged to the plate 1, as at 14:, to facilitate access to the cards when in their upper position. The outer side of the box 13 provides a plain surguide members 2 loosely face for any suitable advertising or. other display matter. I
It will be understood that while I have particularly illustrated my invention as applied to a calendar, .it is not restricted to such use, as it may be used in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate, and that the number of the cards of aset may be varied to suit the demands of the'particular use. It is also to be understood that the invention is not limit-ed to any specific construction or arrangement of the part-s, as numerous modifications can be. made without departing from the spirit thereof. c V V 7.
Having thus described my. invention,-what I claim as new, and ters Patent, is,
1. The combination withrelativelyshiftable card-like members each having an opening therein, of means projected through the openings of the members and having verti desire to secure by Iletcally spaced member suspending portions, m
and a guide portion connecting the outer end of one suspending portion to the inner end ofthe other.. v Y c I 2. The combination with a: plurality of card-like members having openings therein;
of an upstanding part eXtendingthrough-x 7 the openings in said members and having vertically spaced ledges forming supports for said members when in raisedor lowered v positions and having guide portions con necting the inner end of one to the outer end of the other of said ledges. V V 3. In combination, a holder part,-a-member sus sendin and 'uidin meansdcarried V 2: b :3 by said part and having v'ertlcally-spaced member suspending parts anda portion connecting the inner end of one to theouter end of the other of said suspending parts, and a 7 set of relatively shiftable members carried by said means and shiftable in upright position from one tothe other of said ledges.
4. In combination, a body part, avertically disposed card guiding and suspending member carried by "said part, said member having vertically spaced card suspending ledges and a guide'portion connecting the inner end of one to the outer end of the other of said ledgesand having one ledge in yielding contact at its-inner end with said body part, and a set of relatively shiftable elements engaged by said member and shiftable in upright position from one to the other of the suspending ledges thereof."
5. In combination, a body'part, a spring metal member carried by saidpart and having its opposite ends connected to said part with its upper end in removable connection therewith, said member being provided adjacent to its upper end with an outwardly loopedportion, the lower leg of which portion forms a supporting ledge and has yielding contact at its inner end with said body part, thence extending downward and In testimony whereof, I have hereunto outward from the body part and having a signed my name to this specification in the 10 IGtiiltlftllt ledge atdjacefilthto its lower end, presence of two subscribing witnesses.
