To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM H. Drn'rz, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State v of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bulletin-Boards;

and I :do hereby declare that the following is reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which" form a part of thisspecification. i

This invention relates to improvements in bulletin boards and consists of the matters hereinafter described and moreparticularly pointed outin the appended cla ms. 7

' The object of the invention is to produce a simple and eflicientbulletin board with which is. provided a plurality of slips or cards, each card having. a letter or numeral or the like thereon,.there being means'on said bulletin board for holding. the cards in proper position, so that they will spell certainwords or phrases or indicate time or price in numerals, such as the case may be.

The object furthermore relates to the manner in which the certain word or 1 phrase forming cards are supported or held by means of holdingistrips upon the panel.

Said holding strips are so made that the cards may be inserted or placed thereinto from the front thereof into'their properplaces eliminating the necessityof inserting said cards into position between said. strip from the ends thereof and moving the same edgewise therealong to their proper positions between said strips.

- In the drawings: Figure 1 is a yiew in perspective of my improved bulletin-board, showing the same as attached to a wall, with the parts in a position permitting the removal of the card holding panel. Referring more in detail to that embodiment of my invention illustrated the accompanying drawings, 10 indicate rectangular framewhich may be attach? preferablyspaced from a supporting wall 11, by means of clips 12. Each strip is made in the form' of a rail having a base or body 23 which engages with and is fixed tothe panel board 30 in a suitable manner. Made integral with and in a plane parallel with but spaced from the base or body 33 are upper and lower flanges 34, 35, which are connected to the said base 33 by outwardly extending top and bottom web portions 36, 36 The lower flange 35 is of a vertical width greater than that of the flange 34: and being the lowermost flange of the strip, said flange retains or holds the upper edge of each card 32 supported by the strip below.

Each card is of a height greater than the distance between the web 36 of one strip and the lower edge of the flange 35 on the adjacent strip vertically above it, consequently when in placing the cards in between the strips, should the lower edge of the card be first inserted so as to rest on the web 36 of one of said strips.- the upper edge of said card would project upward beyond the lower edge of the flange 35 on the adjacent strip above. Thus the card could not be inserted,

between said flanges in this manner. This position is shown in the upper end of Fig. 5. On the other hand, the distance between the web 36 of one strip and the xpper edge of the flange 34 on the adjacen-iistrip vertically below it is greater than the height of each card 32, and to place the card between said strips, the upper end of said card must be first inserted under thelower flange 35 of one of the strips 31 until the upper edge of said card abuts against the web 36 of said strip.

The lower edge of said card will then be slightly above the upper edge of the flange 3-1 of the adjacent strip below (see lower part of- Fig. 5) when said card may be moved inwardly against the panel 32 and then moved downwardly until the lower edge thereof rests on the web 36. The card 32 then cannot fall out from between the flanges 35, 34, respectively, for the reason that the upper edge of the card now projects above the plane of the inner lower edge of the flange 35. In this manner, the cards may be inserted in their proper place from the front of the panel, thus eliminating the necessity of inserting said cards at the. ends of said strips as has been heretofore done, the requiring the sliding the cards between the flanges of the coacting strips. To remove said cards, the same are moved upwardly so that the lower edge of each card is in a plane above the plane of the upper edge of the flange 34 when they may then be easily :removed. without moving said cards edgewlse toward the ends of the strips. Said cards 32 are not as thick as the space between the flanges 34, 35 and the panel board 30, and are made in that form so that they may be easily handled and inserted into their proper places.

Cards without printed matter thereupon may bevused for spaces between the various words or numbers and such a card is indicated at 39 in Fig. 1.

I might find it desirable to provide several cards of a thickness equal to the space between the panel and the flanges 3 1, 35, as indicated at 40 in Fig. 4, such card to be used only at the end of a row of cards. Said cards 40 will prevent endwise separation between the cards 32 of a certain row.

When the said panel board 30 with its card holding strips and the various cards is in position within the frames 10 and 18, the-front faces of the various strips will be approximately flush with the front face of the members 13 and 14 of the frame 10, and when the hinged frame 18 is in closed position as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the inner lateral edges of the various frame members 20 and 21 will overlap a portion of the lateral edges of the panel frame 17 and securely hold the same in position.

When it is desired to present new matter to the observer, by means of inserting new cards or changing position of the cards already therein to spell new words or phrases,

the padlock 26 is unlocked and removed, and

A sign made in accordance with my invention is waterproof. The panel is easily removable to permit insertion of new cards thereinto or the withdrawal of certain cards already therein from their places between the holding strips as before described, thus eliminating the moving of the entire plurality of cards edgewise one by one to-eitherconstruction, 1 do not wish to be limited transparent face, said back frame comprising rabbeted upper and lower and end frame members, a supplemental frame removably engaged in the rabbeted partof said back frame, said "supplemental frame including a backing member, vertically spaced horizontal retaining strips fixed on said backing member, card members adapted to be retained by said strips, each strip comprising a base attached to the backing member and top and bottom flanges spaced from said base, the top flange being of less'depth than the lower flange and the vertically'adjacent' strips being spaced apart at a distance to permit the insertion of the card members between them, the front faces ofthe supplemental frame and of its card retaining strips i being in the same plane as that of the front face of the back frame and said secondary frame being adapted to engage and overlap the lateral edges ofsaid supplemental frame when the secondary frame is in closed position and means forlocking-said secondary frame in said closed position.
