GEORGE F. STYCHE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHOE FOR ROOF-WALKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914.
Application filed May 20, 1914. Serial No. 839,747.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SrYcHE, a;
citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes for RooflValking, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide shoes for conveniently walking upon the roofs of houses or upon other steep places, and which can readily be adjusted to conform to the slope of the roof.
1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a shoeembodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates base plates adjoining each other at the front end and diverging to the rear and connected at the front end by a short transverse plate 2 and at the rear portions by a longer transverse plate 3. Ears 4 are cut out from the plate 2 and bent upward and apertured to form bearings for a pivot pin 5, on which is pivoted between said ears a bracket 6 supporting the front end of a shoe 7 which has straps 8 and 9 for the heel and toe respectively. The heel of the shoe is supported upon a bracket 10, which is pivoted upon a pivot bolt 11 extending through pairs of lugs 12, and a tube 13 between said lugs, said lugs extending from opposite sides of longitudinally split sleeves 14: on the rounded side members 15 of a U-shaped support 16, the central portion of which is pivoted in ears 17, extending upwardly from the plate 3. A thumb nut 18 is screwed upon the threaded end of said bolt 11. In the base plates are secured downwardly pointing spikes 19 which can penetrate the roof upon which the shoes are used.
It will be seen that the shoe can be adjusted with ease and rapidity to extend at any desired angle from the base plates. To change said angle to enable the shoe to be used on a roof of a different slope it is only necessary to unscrew the thumb nut 18, when the split sleeves 11 will be loose upon the side members 15 of. the U-shaped support, then move the shoe so that it makes the desired angle with the base plates 1, and then screw up the thumb nut again. The tube 13 between the inner lugs limits their movement inward or toward eachother, and by screwing the thumb nut upon the bolt, the bolt and thumb nut are drawn together at the same time, thereby moving the outer lugs toward the inner lugs and firmly clamping the two parts of the sleeves around the side members 15 of the support,.thus giving a firm support for the shoe upon the base at the desired angle.
I claim In combination with a base, a shoethe toe end ofwhich is pivotally supported upon said base, a U-shaped support arranged to support the heel part of'the shoe, the central member of which support is pivotally supported on said base, split sleeves around the side members of said support, each having extensions from opposite sides thereof, a tube between the inner extensions of the two sleeves, a bolt through said pairs of extensions and tube, and a nut on said boltl Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
