ICE-CREEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
Application filed May 11, 1914. Serial No. 837,826.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUsT Rnrss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford Station, Long Island, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ice creepers and has for its object to provide a creeper that may be quickly attached or detached.
Another object of the invention is to provide a detachable creeper adapted to adjustment to horseshoes of different sizes.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an ice creeper having a creeper calk with a recess therein to receive a shoe calk.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a quickly operated means for securely locking the creeper 011 to a horses foot.
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the specification, in which Figure l, is a top plan view of my inven tion. Fig. 2, is a sectional view taken on line B-B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a side elevational view of my device shown in use, and Fig. A, is a sectional view on line AA of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views in which 1, indicates a horses hoof to which is fixed an ordinary horseshoe 2, having a toe calk 3, (shown dotted in Fig. 3), and heel calks 1. To the shoe 2, is fixed my ice creeper 5, which consists of a toe piece 6, having a downwardly projecting toe creeper 7, and a pocket 8, adapted to receive the toe calk 3, of the shoe 2. The member 6, has recesses 9 and 10, provided on the opposing sides of its inner edge 11, to which are pivotally connected the reduced in thickness ends 12 and 13 of the arcuately-formed side members 1 1 and 15, which are provided on the forward ends with inwardly inclined upwardly extending clamps 16 and 17, and similarly formed clamps 18 and 19,- on the rear ends. The extreme rear ends of the members lt and 15, are turned down at right angles thereto and are reduced in thickness toward their edges to form heel creepers 20 and 21. An opening 22, is pro vided in the member 15, through which the screw bolt 23 projects, to engage the nut member 24, which has a flattened extension 25, which is pivoted to the member 14, in order that said nut member may be alined with the bolt 23, regardless of the relativedegree of angle of the members let and 15, toward one another. A lock nut 25, is mounted on the bolt 23 and is adapted to be bound against the member 24 in order to prevent the bolt from becoming jarred loose. The bolt 23, is provided with a head 27, by means of which it may be operated.
It will be seen from the above description that the device may readily be adjusted to hoofs of difierent sizes, the bolt 23 drawing in the rear ends of the device until it is firmly clamped.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An overshoe for horses comprising a straight toe piece, said toe piece having an arcuate inner edge, said toe piece being cut away at opposite ends to provide pivotal bearings, two segmental wings pivotally secured upon said pivotal bearings flush with said toe piece, said wings adapted to continue the curvilinear outline of said arcuate edge, a pair of securing clamps secured upon said wings at their innermost ends, and adj ustable means for holding said wings in adjusted relation.
2. In a device of the kind described in combination a straight toe piece, a pair of side wings pivotally secured at one end upon said toe piece, a stud secured upon one of said wings, an internally-threaded sleeve pivotally secured upon said stud, a rod projecting through the other of said wings and being screw threaded at its extremity, the screw-threaded end of said rod engaging said sleeve, an operating head integrally secured upon said rod, a lock-nut screwed on said rod and adapted to bear against said sleeve, and clamps carried by said wings.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST REISS.
