ADJUSTABLE TONGS.
1 l Specificationofletters Patent.
hpplication filed August 14, 1913. Serial No. 784,818.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that 1,? ALBERT BEYER, acitlzen of the United States, residing at Cole man, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement intongs and more particularly to tongs of the type used by blacksmiths and the llke.
The object of thepresent invention is the provision of a device of this character ,of a simple construction which will enable the material to be operated on to. be readily grasped and securely held while manipulating the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which can be readily adjusted to adapt the same to be used upon materials of various sizes.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter, when read in connection with the acdrawings forming a part hereof :wherein a convenient embodiment of the inventionis shown and wherein like characters of reference referto similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevationof my improved tongs; and, Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates a stock which is provided with the usual handle portion a and with an enlarged outer end a. The extreme outer end of the stockA is provided with a bifurcation a therein and with an opening a which extends transversely through the stock and which is positioned adjacent its bifurcated terminal just inward of the bifurcation a The enlarged end a of the stock A is further provided with a transverse opening a disposed at right angles tothe opening a and communicating with the openinga heretofore referred to being of greater widthl than said opening. Slidably mounted in the opening a in the stock A is the threaded shank b which projects at substantially right angles from the inner end of a jaw member B which extends substantially parallel to the stock A. The shank b and the opening a in the stock A are so formed as to prevent any turningof the shank in said opening. In the particular embodiment illustrated in the drawings, the shank b is provided with fiat side faces which are adapted to lie in close proximity to the side walls of the opening a, in the shank. It will be understood, however, that the same result may be accomplished n other ways.
Positioned within the transverse opening" a in the stock A is a hat a which has a threaded engagement with the shank 7) of the jaw B. As the transverse opening a in the shankis of greater width than the opening a n which the stem 7) ofthe jaw B works, 1t Wlll be seen that the nut will be held against displacement and thus by rotatmg the same the jaw B may be adjusted transversely of the stock A to any desired extent.
C designates a lever which is substantially co-extensive in length with the shank A, and
which is provided with a handle portion 0 adapted to he alongside of the handle port1on a of the stock A. The outer end of the lever C is arched as at 0' to prevent interference with the projecting end of the stem b of the jaw B, and the extreme outer end of said lever is provided with a downwardly turned portion 0 which fits within the bifure cation a formed in the end of the stock, and is pivotally secured therein by a suitable pivot bolt 0 bifurcated outer end of the stock G and is provided with a curved or cam-shaped lower to be grasped is introduced between the engaging surface of the jaw B and the projecting end C of the lever O. Thehandles are then brought together which causes the cam face 0* of the projectingend c to engage the material and clamp the same securely against the securing face of the jaw B.
While a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that many changes may bemade to the form and con- Patented Aug. 4, 1914. a

. I Witnesses:
2. A device of the character described inxcludinga stock, a jaw, means for adjusting said-j aw transversely of the stock, the terminal of'said stock adjacentwthe jaw being 20 bifurcated, a lever pivoted between the biinrcations of said stock, one terminal of said lever being rounded and movable in the same plane asithe jaw to coact With the same to engage the Work." v
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
