FIRE-BOX CONSTRUCTION.
Specification o1' Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1914.
Application filed June 23, ISM). Serial No. 568,507.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. MCCIazLLoN, a citizen of the United States, and a .resident of Everett, in the co nty of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fireox Construction, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a, like letters on the drawingsJ representing like parts.
This invention relates to -fire-box construction and more particularly to fireboxes of the locomotive type. The character of the invention may be best understood by refer.- ence to. the following description of illustrative embodiments thereof shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a fire-box shown herein as embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sec tion taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale is a horizontal section taken online 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. Al; is a vertical section through a modified form of fire-box.
Referring to Fig. 1 in the drawings, the illustrative fire-box thereshown comprises a cro-wn formed of a plurality of sections l extending longitudinally or from front to rear of the fire-box, each'of said sections preferably being of convexed channel form with the convexed' sides of said sections facing the interior of the fire-box and the flanges of the sections extending upwardly away from the interior of the firebox, said flanges being riveted or otherwise secured together. Preferably spaced above the crown sections described is a top herein formed of a sheet 3 arched substantially to conform to the contour of the usual barrel 5 and at its forward end (Fig. 2) may overlap the latter, as at 7, and be riveted or otherwise secured thereto. The top. sheet may be strengthened by suitable ribsv 9 spaced at intervals and extending transversely of said top sheet from side to'slde of the fire-box. Herein these ribs are T* shaped in section and are secured to the exterior of said sheet. To support the channel sections by this arched sheet there may be provided hangers herein in -the form of stayplates 11 extending longitudinally of the fire-box, said plates being removably bolted or otherwise secured at their upper ends between opposed angle irons 13 which in turn are secured to said top sheet. The
- between the stay plates l1 depend from said sheet and preferablyhu ve their lower ends interposed adjacent flanges of the crown sections and may be secured thereto by the rivets which connect said sections. To per mit water and steam to circulate freely in the crown the stayplates may be provided with suitable apertures 15 (Fig. 2) spaced at' intervals throughout the lengths of said plates. The front ends of the be secured to a flue sheet 17. Herein the flue sheet is cut away or formedI to conform to the contours of the crown sections and has a flange 19 (Fig. 2) extending away from the interior of the dre-box. The sections are c'l" sufficient length to overlie said flange and may be riveted or otherwise secured thereto. Since the flange extends away from the interior of the tire-box the rivets securing the sections thereto will be ctiectually protected from the fire.
The side walls` of' the fire-box may be formed in any suitable manner. Herein the side walls each comprise outer and inner channeled or flanged sections 2l (Fig. 3), alternate Sections having long flanges or webs Q3 to which are riveted the intermediate sections. These webs are apertured at intervals as at 25 to permit free eirculation through the walls. The upper and lower ends of the sections may be closed byv hsuitable cups` 27 riveted or otherwise secured thereto. To connect the side walls tothe crown the sections preferably are flattened at their upper ends, and the top sheet referred to may be extended' down to overlap the flattened portions ot' said sections andmay be riveted thereto. To provide communication from said side walls to the crown chamber formed between the crown sections and the top sheet, suitable nipples 2t) may be expanded or otherwise secured in registering apertures in the overlapped portions of said top sheet and wall Sections.
In Fig. 'l is shown a modification which is similar in many respects to that just de scribed.' In this modification the top sheet is riveted to the interiors of the outer sides of the wall sections, said sides being extended upward somewhat beyond the inner sides of 'the sections to overlap said sheet. To J sheet strengthening ribs 33 are provided, but instead o'f being secured to the upper vsections may side of said sheet preferably are secured to the under side thcreot'. In tl'is modification Vcbai/nmer facilitate this lotherwise secured thereto'.
I 'obstacle in sect-ion may the hangers supporting tbe crown sections are in the form or rods 35 which may be flattened at Jtheir upper ends as at 37 and boltedor otherwise secured to the top slieet ribs 33. The lower ends of said rods maybe bifurcated to receive tbe adjoined iianges o the crown sections and may' be bolted or if desired calle- 'ing strips may be interposed between the flanges ci adjacent sections. in this modification closing` cups are not 'provided for the tops of the `side walls, but the latter may communicate with tbe crown chamber through their upper ends. To :prevent any possibility of spreading ci1 the tcp sbeet, stay rods sucli'as 39 may be secured .to the top sheet strengthening; -ribsyadigicent the juncture ot said sheet with tlie side walls.
The circulation in tbe'crown chamber is mainly in tbe direction of tbc length of said chamber and tbe crown sections in extending in the directionciA the length or the circulation. The crown sections are without interruption or tlie directions of their lengths. At their front .ends where they are secured to tbe iiue. sheet lange the sections are smooth and cieanA permitting a free, unbindered iiow to or from. tbe crown chamber and barre-.. Tile convened sections provide for expansion and contraction without de veloping leakage strains. A sectionv may readily be removed for replacement or repair, merely by tbe removal ci the hanger connections of the sections without disturbing otherseetions, the side walls,` or any other parts of tbe nre-box. @r if desired a be taken out without disturbing` by removing tbe-bolts conthe hangers, as
adiolning sec necting sucb. sections to 'the tions'.
Having described selected embodiments oi my invention without limiting myself thereto what l clairn as new secure by Letters 4i?atent is:
l. a irebox, the combination et crown sections extending in a direction from tberont to 'the rear of the iire-boX each otconvezred channel forni with iianges projecting upward away from the interior of and desire to' Licence@ tbe tire-box; a tcp spaced above said sections and i-crrning a steam water circulation chamber' therebetween; and means connect ing said flanges with said top to contribute to ,the support o said sections.
2. .ln a lire-bor., the combination of crown sections extending in a direction from the front to tbe rear ci tbe tire-boi; and each oit 'convened channel *form with flanges pro jectingn upward away vroin tbe interior of the tirefbox; top spaced above said sec tions and ormingqa .steam and water circw lation chamber therebetween.; means connecting said flanges with said top to contribute to the support or said sections; and bellow walls secured to tbe outer sections and communicatingwitli said cba'inberz;
3. ln a Firebox. the combination of crown sections extending front to tbe rear of the fire-bex and'eacb. of convened channel ornf "with 'flanges oro-v jecting upward away from tbe interior' ont the {ire-bor; a top spaced above scid secr. and water circnaj.-
tions and orriing a steam lation chamber therebetween; means conV nectingg1 said iianges with said top to con.- tribute to ltbe supi-gort cil-said sections; and walis comprising series oiibcilow steam generating sections securedto some difs'aid crown sections and-communicating with 'said chamber. A r
il. ln a tire-box, the combinationof 'crown sections extending in a directionirom the iront to tbe rear convened channel Jform with anges projecting upward away from tbe interior ci' tbe lire-box; a top spaced above said sections and forming a steam and water circulation cbainber tberebetween; means connectingi said iianges with said tcp to contribute to tbe support of said sections; and a tiue slieet icorined to conform to the under contours of said sections.
in testimony whereof, name to this specification, in
two subscribinp,n witnesses. i
' d'lliES ltr, MCCLELLL ll have signed my 'Witnesses HENRY m. li/nriraiirs, ROBERT E. Kastanien.
