KNIFE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anomnn J. JACQUES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Knife, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved construction in watch chain pendants.

An object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction in pendants for watch chains whereby the same may be quickly removed from the chain or secured thereto.

A further object is to provide means whereby it will be impossible for the pendant to become lost through accidental detachment from the chain.

A further object is to provide an improved form of knife whereby the blade holding pivot will be secured to the inner surface of the knife sides and will not project'therethrough, thereby leaving the entire outer surface of the knife sides for ornamental and decorative purposes.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 illustrates the blank from which the knife casing is formed. Fig. 4: represents a blank for the pivotal mountg of the knife blade and to: further provide detachable means for securing theknife to a watch chain or similar structure. Fig. 5 represents in detail the form of the means for detachably engaging the blank illustrated in Fig. 4.

of the blank, as illustrated in Fig. 3, is provided with a downwardly projecting portion 5 which forms the bottom wall of the casing when the sides 2 and 3 are bent as illustrated in Fig. l, the said portion 5 being rigidly soldered or otherwise fastened thereto.

In order to provide that the knife blade 6 may be pivotally secured to the casing 1 and furthermore that the pivot will not extend through the side walls of the said casing'the member as illustrated in'blank in Fig. 4 is provided and is composed of the two similar portions 7-7 which are bent about the lines 88, the apertures 9 being thereby brought into alinement and adapted to rigidly hold therebetween a pivot upon which is rotatably mounted the knife blade 6. Adjacent the central portion of the member as illustrated in Fig. 4 are the two projecting wings 10 formed by removing the central portion of I the member and also cutting away that portion designated at 11. The purpose ofthe projecting wings 10 as will be apparent from a reference to Fig. 2, is to provide resilient means adapted to engage the pivoted end of the knife blade and to act in the capacity of a spring to hold the knife blade in a closed position which as will be hereinafter more fully explained, will render it impossible for the attaching means, whereby the knife is secured to a chain, to be accidentally detached. Located adjacent each extremity of the blank as illustrated in Fig. 4 which will be hereinafter termed a blade carrying member, are the T-shaped slots12. The said slots are so arranged that when the blade carrying member is installed in position in the knife casing the restricted portion of the said T-shaped slots will be uppermost.

In order that the knife may be detachably secured to a chain or the equivalent it is provided with a ring 13 having an arm 14 depending therefrom, to the lower extremity of which is secured or formed integral therewith a cross bar 15. The ring, arm'and bar constitute means for detachably securing the knife to a chain the act-ion being that the knife blade 6 which is 'rotatably mounted upon the pivot 16 is so positioned with relation to theT-shaped slots 12' that the rear port-ion 17 of the knife blade is adapted to rotate in front of the enlarged portion of the T-shaped slots 12 and to prevent the bar 15 of the ring member from entering there in. The upper edge of the knife is cut away at the rear portion as at 18 whichprovides that when the knife blade 6 is at right angles to the knife casing as illustrated in Fig. 2 the portion 18 will lie below the cross per-- tion of the T-shaped slots 12 with the result that the ring shaped member with the depending arm 14 and bar 15 may be inserted between the sides 2 and 3 of the knife casing and assume a position as illustrated in Fig. 2 in which the bar 15 will register with the enlarged portion of the T-shaped slots 12 in blade carrying member. The ring 13 and therefore the bar 15 is rotated about a vertical axis through 90 degrees to the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and the bar 15 may then enter within the restricted portion of the slots 12. By now closing knife blade 6 the portion 17 thereof will rotate in front of the enlarged portion of the slots and prevent the bar 15 from entering therein. From the foregoing it will be apparent that the ring will be securely locked within the restricted portion of the T-shaped slots and by reason.

of the projecting wings, resiliently engage the sides of the knife blade, the blade will be held in a closed position and thus it will be impossible for the ring 13 which is adapted to be attached to a watch chain or equivalent thereof, to be detached accidentally from the knife proper. When, however, the knife is to be used, it being pointed out that if the knife were intended to be permanently secered to the chain, the chain would either have to be made excessively long or the radius of action of the knife would be considerably limited; the blade 6 is opened by rotating upon the pivot 16 which is rigidly secured in the openings 9 of the blade carrying member until it assumes a posit-ion such that the cut away portion 18 of the knife blade is adjacent the enlarged portion of the T-shaped slot and exposes the latter. The ring 13 is now pressed downwardly which brings the bar 15 adjacent the large portion of the slots and by a suitable rotating of the bar 15, it is withdrawn from the said slots and is positioned parallel and lies between the sides 2 and 3 of the casing and may then be withdrawn therefrom. The knife blade may then be opened and used in the ordinary manner.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that my invention is not limited to pen knife structures but can be suitably employed with watch charms or pendants wherein a blade is mounted to rotate adjacent the slots with an enlarged and a restricted portion. The outer formation of the blade may be varied such as to embody a button hook, pencil or similar article which may be used as a watch charm.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim to be new and original with me is 1. The combination of a casing, a blade.

carrying member secured therein, a blade rotatably carried thereby, engaging means secured to said casing and detachable therefrom by rotating about the longitudinal axis thereof, said knife blade constituting a lock for holding the said engaging means against rotation.

2. In a device of the class described, a body member, a blade rotatably secured thereto, the upper portion of said body member provided with alined openings, said openings provided with restricted passages leading therefrom, engaging means secured within said restricted passages, one portion of said blade adapted to retain said engaging means in said restricted passage.

3. The combination of a casing, a me1nber rotatably secured thereto, a member rigidly secured in said casing and provided .1

with apertures adjacent the upper extremity thereof, said apertures provided with an enlarged portion and a restricted portion, chain engaging means provided with a bar secured thereto, said bar adapted to enter within said enlarged portions of said apertures, and to fit within said restricted portions, said rotatable'member adapted to confine said bar within said restricted portions to prevent the detachment thereof.

4. A pendant comprising a casing, a blade carrying member secured thereto, said member provided with alined apertures therein, a knife blade pivotally secured to the blade carrying member in said apertures, said blade provided with a depressed portion, said blade carrying member with T-shaped alining slots adjacent the upper extremity thereof, engaging means including an arm extending therefrom, a bar secured to said arm and projecting at right angles thereto, said bar adapted to fit between said blade carrying member and to enter said T-shaped slots, said knife blade adapted to confine said bar to the restricted portion of said T- shaped slots and said depressed portion of the knife blade adapted to allow the de tachment of said arm and bar.

5. The combination of a handle, a blade or tool pivotally connected thereto, means in the said handle and coacting with means at the shank of the blade for securing an attaching element thereto, an attaching element coacting with the handle means and blade means and detachably held to said handle, said attaching element locked to said handle with the blade housed in the handle and detachabletherefrom when the said blade is rotated from the said closed position.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a handle, a blade or allied tooL pivotally connected thereto, an attaching element, means disposed within the said handle and coacting with means upon'the blade shank locking said attaching element In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signa- 10 ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
