Be it known that I, FRANK. H. LA PIERRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to cigar cutters, and the invention consists of a disk shaped case having a central hole for the insertion of the tip of the cigar, with a pivoted cutting blade, and a spring arranged to operate the blade and a catch `for holding the same closed, all as hereinafter more fully described.

Figure l is a side elevation of the device, enlarged. Fig. 2 is a face view, with one side of the case removed, showing the bladelocked within the case, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the blade released, ready for operation, these views being enlarged to two diameters. Fig. 4 is an edge view of full size.

The object of this invention is to produce a light and eective cigar cutter that can be attached to a watch chain and worn as an ornament, or be carried in the vest pocket with convenience.

To construct my device I make a case which consists of two disks of metal, each having a central orifice Z, one of said disks preferably being formed with a raised rim r, Figs. 1 and 2, and the other disk being of a size to fit within said rim as shown in Fig. 1, in which B indicates the smaller, and A the larger disk. The two disks are fastened together by rivets or screws in such a manner as to leave a space between them, and in this space I lit a cutter or blade C, which is pivoted at its lower end so as to swing on the pivot d in the arc of a circle and cause its cutting edge to pass over or by the central holes Z. The back of this blade is formed with a projection n, so curved or rounded that when the blade is forced inward to the position shown in Fig. 2, it will be ush with the edge of the case, it projecting through a slot or opening in the rim r when thrown back, as shown in Fig. 3.

`To lock the blade fast when shoved in, I arrange a sliding catch b as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, its lower end being arranged to engage againstashoulder or projection o on the upper end of the blade, as shown in Fig. 2. This slide or catch b is inserted through a slot in the rim r of the case, and is drawn inward bythe curved end of spring f which engages therewith, said catch being guided in its move- 6o ments by a guide pin e, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or by any equivalent means. The outer end of the catch is provided with an eye and ringfor securing it to a watch chain or cord if desired, the spring f being sufticiently strong or stiE to prevent the catch from being disengaged `byv the weight of the device.

To use the device the catch bis drawn out far enoughto unlock the blade O which is 7o instantly thrown back to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the tip of the cigar is placed in the hole Z and the blade forced inward, cutting olf the tip of the cigar and at the same time being caught and held fast by the catch b.

`In order to prevent the thumb from slipping on the curved or rounded edge n of the blade, the latter is serrated as shown in Fig.

3, and preferably the edge of the case will be 8o correspondingly serrated or milled all around.

I have shown the springs f and f as being composed of a single piece, being held in place by a small piece of metal hfastened by one of the rivets which serve to hold the disk B in place, this being a simple construction; but it is obvious that separate springs may be substituted, and they be fastened by other means if desired.

The case being made of silver or gold, may 9o be made as ornamental as desired, and thus the device be made to combine the two qualities of utility and ornamentation. Its size and shape admirably adapt it to be either worn on a watch chain or carried in the vest pocket without inconvenience.
