Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 191d.
Application filed December 31, 1913. Serial No. 809,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERARD T. Snonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improve-- ments in window fasteners, and, more particularly, to window fasteners which are adapted to lock both the upper and the lower window sashes in a partly open, as well as in a closed position.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastener of simple construction, which is adapted to be readily applied to the window sash and casing and with which either the upper or the lower sash may be securely locked against outside interferenceeither in a partly open or a closed position.
A further object is to provide a device of the above described character in which a movement in one direction will simultaneously lock both the upper and the lower sashes in the particular positions to which they are adjusted,- and a corresponding movement in the opposite direction will re lease them.
Another object is to provide a device of the above described character which may be readily applied to any ordinary window and which may be used at either side of the window casing by merely reversing the position of some of the parts.
I accomplish these objects by the means shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figures 1 and 2 are horizontal sectional views of a window casing provided with a locking device made according to my invention, and arranged in position of use. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Figs. 4: and 5 are longitudinal sectional views of the locking device showing the same in the locked and unlocked positions of use. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the device with the parts arranged for use at the lefthand side of the window casing. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the base-plate.
In the drawing a indicates the window casing having the usual runways for the lower sash b, and upper sash c, said runways being separated by the usual parting bead d.
According to my invention I provide a base-plate c which is adapted to be fastened by screws, or any other suitable means, to the upper end of the lower sash, the length of said plate being approximately equal to, or no greater than the width of the sash, and said plate being arranged transversely of the sash as shown. Said plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 6 and a screw 7 is mounted in said slot, the under sides of which are rabbeted to receive the head of said screw. A locking bolt 9 is mounted on the plate 6, and said screw j is arranged to pass through an aperture in the middle portion of said bolt. A nut it is threaded on the upper end of screw f, and is adapted to clamp the bolt onto the plate 0. Said bolt g is provided with an upper sash-engaging endportion 9 which extends longitudi nally of the bolt and in the direction of the slot 0, and a transversely extending parting-bead-engaging projection 9 which is arranged adjacent said projecting end-portion and extends at right angles thereto. The opposite end of the bolt 9 from its sash engaging portion g is provided with a reversible dog having oppositely disposed lugs 70 and 7%, either of which, (according to which side of the bolt is arranged upperinost,) is adapted to enter the slot 6 and engage the outer end thereof to prevent movement of the bolt back from looking position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and also to hold the bolt in open position, as shown in Fig. 5, is desired.
The upper sash c is provided with a series of recesses 0 which are arranged in alinement with the sash-engaging portion 9 of the bolt, in different positions of the sash, each recess being preferably provided with a metallic lining 2', as shown. The parting bead d is provided with a series of notches cl arranged in position to permit the transverse projection g to pass therein and said notches are preferably metal lined or protected by means of a U-shaped clip j, which is adapted to be inserted therein and to be fastened in position by a screw m which passes through the parting bead into the casing.
In Figs. 1 to 5 the parts are shown as arranged for use at the right hand side of the window. f it is desired to lock the upper and the lower sash to the casing it is merely necessary to slide the bolt, from the position of Fig. 2, toward the upper sash, and to the position of Fig. 1. This the bolt cannot be moved back without lifting the dog out of engagement with the plate. The nut h is preferably tightened when the bolt is in locked position to clamp the bolt firmly onto the plate and thus providean additional means to prevent outside interference.
If it is desired to use the device on the left-hand side. of the window sash it is merely necessary to remove the nut it, turn the bolt the-other side up and then reinsert the screw; v
The above described device is of simple construction as the two principal parts the base plate and bolt-may be made by a casting or similarly inexpensiveoperation and require very little machine work, so that. the whole device may be made at a comparatively low cost for such a device, and it may also be readily applied to any ordinary window at small expense.
I claim I I In combination with a window casing having a parting bead and upper and lower window sashes movable at opposite sides of said parting bead, a base plate mounted on the upper end of said lower sash, and having a slot extending perpendicularly with relation to said upper sash, a screw movably mounted in said slot, a locking bolt adapted to be held either sideup on said plate and through which said screw is passed, a nut on said screw for clamping said bolt to said plate, said bolt havingan end portion, ei tending longitudinally with relation to said slot, and a transversely extending side portion, said end and side portions being respectively arranged to engage the upper sash and the parting head when the bolt is moved toward said upper sash, and said bolt having oppositely disposed projections ar ranged to engage said plate and lock said bolt against longitudinal movement in either of its positions of use, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
