Description
UNITED STATES PATENTA OFFICE.`l
HORATIO WILLARD, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. l l 0,41@g dated December 20, 1870.
'viding the bolt which passes entirely through the case and projects on either side thereof with notches so arranged in combination with a spring that when the key moves the bolt forward or backward the casing on each side will engage the notches, and thus securely lock the bolt, substantially as herein set forth.
Toenable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction.
A represents the casing, made in the usual manner.
-b is the bolt, provided with notches c c, and
' also with the mouth d for the key to work in.
It will be observed that the upper half of g represents a spring, somewhat of circular or bow shape. Said spring is firmly secured to the upper part of the case, so that each end will rest upon the bolt. Thus it will be observed that as the key forces the bolt forward or backward the notches will drop over the sides ofthe casing and lock the bolt.
I am aware that positive fastening-notches upon the bolt are not new, and that notches with 'beveled sides are used in the same position as mine. I do not therefore claim broadly this feature; but
What I do claim is- The combination of the spring g and the bolt b passing through both sides ot' the case and furnished with two positive fastening-notches that engage on the sides of the case, said bolt being operated directly by the key, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
y HORATIO WILLARD. Witnesses: l
t PHILIP DUKER,
AnoLIJH FIRNHABER'.
