ABINGDOII ILLINOIS.4
Leners Patent N0. 1c7,096, dazed september 6, 1870.
Hoon- IMPROVEMENT IN BOLT-FASTBNING-S.
-The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makmg pari: ofthe same.
'1, PETER PETERSON, of Abingdon, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Bclt-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
I Nature (md Objects of the Invention..
The nature of myinvention relates to thc combination of a pivoted lever, sliding bolt, and cam disks .or segments of circles. The lever being pivoted, so it may betbrown round to engage with a stud ou the bolt and prevent the saine being unbolted. The disks so arranged that they. may be made to 'hold the lever secure from releasing the bolt,`all substantially as hereinafter described.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1-is a view of my invention, showing the side from which it is operated.
Figure 2 is a view of the same, showing the oppositeside from fig. I.' g
.Figure 3 is the same view as tig.v 1, with the outside plate removed to show the working parts and interiorarrangement. A
Figure 4 is a sectional view of. Iig. 2, on the line xx.
. General Description.
A is the face-plate.
B B' are flat slidiiig'bolts, with studs, O O', extending through slots in the face-plate A, and carrying on their outer ends knobs4 or buttons, D D', by which the bolts may be be operated longitudinally.
E isa lever, pivoted on a stud, e, which extends through the face-plate A, and carries a button, F, by which the lever may be oscillated in a plane parallel with the face of the plate A.
This lever E is provided with a recess which engages with the stud C', when the lever is thrown'into the positionshown by the dotted lines at iig. 3, and holds the bolt B from being drawn back.
H H' arecams, in the form of segments of circles, pivoted in the face-plate A by studs, h h, which car. ry buttons, I I, on their other ends.
J is a wooden plate, serving to keep the bolts B B `from bearing on the lever E, and to make a smooth face and guide for thebclts B B on the back plart of the device. The plate J may, however, be left off entirely, it desired.
L is a bolt for holding the plate J in place.
The manner of 'operating my invention is as follows The ca ms H H being turned round, by meansv of the buttons I I, tc the position shown by the full lilies at tig. 3, the lever E may then, by means of` the button F, be thrown into the position shown by the full lines in the s a'me figure, in which position `it will allow the bolt B to be slid freely back and forth. Now, by sliding the bolt B' ont to theposition shown by the dotted lines at tiff. 3, then the lever E may be swung over by the but-ton F, as shown by the dotted lines, fig. 3, when the angular part of said lever will come behind the piu c', and hold the boltB' securely 'from being drawn back. Now, by turning thc cams H H, by ineansio'f their respective buttons, until their circular sides rest against the.lcver E, as shown by the dotted lines, they will securely lock or fast-en the lever E in said'position, and hold it so until both cams are again turned into the Acorrect posi-` tion to allow the lever to be oscillated onl the pivot e.
The buttons may have any private orplain marks desired, by which it may be known when they are .in the position desired by'the owner or operator.
The bolt B has no connection with the locking ar rangement or lever E, aud may be left olf or put on.
In case it is on the button for operating it may serve to add .to the number'and mislead the uninitiated in manipulating them. g
y Claim.
I claim as my inventionrlhe combination of the lever E, cams H H, and buttons I, 1,-F, and D', with the bolt and plate A, all constructed and operating substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
