letters Patent No. 100,661, dated llfalrchV 8, 187 0.
.IMPRQYEMENT IN commen LATCH AND Lock- The Schedulerefen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part `of the same Be it known thatI, FRANK P; Prtneimn, of New Haven, nl thev county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in l i Knob-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following,
when taken4 in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a i'nll, clear, and exact description of thesfime, and which said drawings constitute .part of this speciiication,'and represent inaffluvof fig. l i
""uary 11, 1879,. such. as have' the lockv and latch-bolt arranged in the same ense, the object being to convert the lock into `a night-latch, and use the same keyhole that is used for the key totnrn thelock-bolt, To :this end the invention consists in the arrangement of the lock-bolt and its tumblerspand the latch-bolt and its tumblers, and the latch-bolt `provided Iwith other tumblers, and theltwo keys constructed so that while `one will act only' oni the lock-bolt, the other will act only ou the latch-holt. l l
A is the case oi the" usual form B, the face-plate; C, the latch-bolt; D, the lock-bolt; E, the key-hole on oneside; and F, the key-holeon thelother side ofthe usual form. The lock-bblt is arranged with `tumblers a a., which Vare at one ,si-de oi' the case, the lock-bolt being-upon tlie same side of the center.
The keyavhich operates the -lock-bolt is formed as seen in tigP the Vbit both sides of the center being `the same, the" guarded c on one side,A and the bit j? `upon the same side operating the bolt whenjthekeyi is inserted through the key-hole E, and when inserted tlirough the hey-hole FJ, then the bitsd e' andf operate the lock-bolt andv its tumblers, that is to say,- i one-haii' the key onlyacts wheninser'tcd on one side,
andthe other half when inserted from the otherside.
The latch-bolt is operated by the knob by connection with the bolt at Ginlike manner asin mypatent beiin'e referred to, yet may be constructed to be operated uponby other known devices.
H is a lever, see fig. 2, pivoted at I, and so as to hea-r against a shoulder, n, on the latch-bolt.
'Pivoted to vthe' lever H at on, are arranged three tuinblers 1 2 o, (more or lesser in nuinber,) see fig. 3, and an arm, .4, the said arm being constructed with a hooked end, as secu in fig. 2, so that when the key heilig turned, strikes the said hooked end, it will draw in ,the latch-holt, i
'l lis arrangement-is for the night-latch, and the key is constructed as in tig. 4, the guards on the bit of the key numbered, and coiTesponding to the tumblers oi' the latch-bolt, and the bit is upon one side only of the center, and is'made longer tha-n 'the bit of the principal key, and is to be ,inserted only through 'the keyhole VE, which brings` it into position to reach the tumblers 1 2 3, and the arm 4, so that the tumblers raised and the arm pressed back'by the key, will draw in the latch-bolt, thus through the same key-hole boththe latch-bolta-nd lock-bolt are operated, but by different keys. L
When .the latch-holt'is to be setfora night-latch, it is uecessa'ny to prevent the drawing ofthe latch by the outside knob. To do this, I arrange a bolt, L, as seen in tlg. 6, in the neck of the knob, so as to slide longitudinally therein; and in the rose, as seen in iig. 7, l form a recess, P, so that the bolt L upon the ininside knob may, when desired toset the knob, be set into-the recess 1, and thus hold the knob intliat position, so that-the latch cannot be operated bythe outside knob.
I claim as my invention-- t The combination ofthe lock-bolt D, with its tuinblers', and the latch-bolt C, with its tumblers, andthe arm 4, constructed and arranged withiuthe same case, so `that the lock-bolt may be operated by one key inserted upon either side, and the latch-bolt by another key inserted through the same hole, the said keys opera-ting only ltheir respective bolts, substantially in the manner described.
