HAT-PIN GUARD.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914:.
Application filed January 6, 1914. Serial No. 810,593.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALIon CoATns, a citizen of theDominion of New Zealand, and residing at Hamilton, in the Provincial District of Auckland, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following is-a specification.
This invention relates to devices employed.
provided with a shield madeof sheet metal or other material which will resist penetration by a hat pin. The shield is attached to its loop by arms, and in the space between the loop end and the shield a thickness of cork is provided wherein the points of the pins may be inserted without detriment to their sharpness. When used upon the outside-of a hat, the shield is made ornamental or is covered by the trimming of the hat.
. The invention as applied to the outside of a hat is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1, is a cross section of a hat with the guard fixed upon the outside thereof. Fig. 2, is a sectional plan on line A-A, Fig. 1, nd, Fig. 3, is a perspective View of the guard.
Referring to the drawing, the wire, 1, is bent into a substantially semi-circular shape to fit around the crown of the hat 2, and is provided at its ends with loops 3 and 4, which extend along opposing sides of the hat. The central part of the wire thereby forms a connection for said loops. The loop, 3, is provided with a shield, 5, attached to the loop by arms, 6. The shield corresponds in slze to the size of its loop, so that a pin passed through the loop will be arrested by the shield. In the space between the shield and the loop a layer of cork, 7, is provided.
The guard is attached to the hat by stitching or other suitable means, and after the hat has been placed upon the wearers hair, the hat pins, 8, are pushed through the loop, 4, and through the wearers hair and the loop, 3, until they are stopped by the shield, 5. The cork, 7, is pierced by the pins, 8, which are held thereby without damage to their points.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A guard of the kind described comprising a wire bent into'loops at its ends so that the central part of said wire forms a connection for said loops, one of said loops being adapted to lie against one side of the crown of the hat and the other against the opposing side, a shield corresponding in size to one of the loops, arms connecting said shield to said loop, and alayer of cork inperted between said shield and the adjacent 2. A guard of the kind described comprising a wire bent into substantially semicircular shape so as to fit around the crown of the hat, an elongated loop formed at one end of said wire so as to lie against one side of the crown of the hat, an elongated loop formed at the other end of said wire so as to lie against the opposing side of the crown of the hat, a shield corresponding in size to one of the loops, arms connecting said shield to said loop, and a layer of cork i11- perted between said shield and the adjacent oop.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
ALICE COATES.
