Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 11914.
-Application filed December 4, 1913. Serial No. 804,598.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBOARHENRlOKSON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident I which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention relates to the class of tools having ahanrlle member, anda foot at an. angle thereto, gripping meansbemg provied on the foot for engagement with the pipe pr other article to be ert a lifting pull on the pipe.
An object of my invention is ulled, the tool beingrockable on the heel of the foot to exto provide I in'a tool of the character described, a novel arrangement of gripp ng dog so mounted as to exert and end thrust against a solid portion of the tool, movements of the dog for the engagement and release of the article to .be pulled.
It is also an object of my invention to proprovision being made for vide a tool of the indicated character having 1 an ample capacity to accommodate pipes or bolts of varying sizes.
7 It is also an object of my invention to improve in various articulars, devices of the general character indicated, to the end' that efliciency in operation may be promoted,
as 'well as economy in manufacture and sumplicity of adjustment.
The invention consists in the novel features particularly explained and defined.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying my invention, showing the same in use; Fig. 2 1s a vertical longitudinal section;
and Fig. 3 1s a partial sectional plan view.
lln constructing a practical embodimentof my invention as illustrated, a handle 10 is provided, and a foot 11 disposed at a forward angle to the handle, the tool being ada ted to rock on the heel 12 at the rear of the foot. A vertical opening 13 extends through the foot to receive a pipe A or other article to be pulled, and a gripping dog 14 is carried by the foot. The dog extends transversely of the opening 13, projecting atit-s forward end into said opening, and received at its rear end in a complementary recess 15. To retain the dog in position and ward prevent displacement thereof, a transverse pin or rivet 16 extends through opposite sides of the foot 11 and through the dog, at a rear portion thereof.
As seen best in Fig. 2, the pin 16 is received in an oblong slot 17 in the dog, the arrangement being such that said dog is capable of a vertical rocking movement in the foot, and furthermore is capable of a bodily longitudinal sliding movement for' ward and back to an extent that its rear end surface 14 will take a bearing against a forwardly disposed surface 15* on the solid portion of the tool adjacent to the heel 12, said surface constituting the rear end wall of the recess 15, the said wall and the opposed rear surface of the dog preferably rounding, as shown. The construction relieves the pin 16 of all strain, permitting a loose play of the dog relatively to the said pin, the thrust of the dog when in use being 4 thus received directly against the body of the tool.
In practice, I prefer to provide a spring 18 associated with the dog, said spring in the present example, being a plate spring secured at its upper side to the handle 10 by screws 18 or equivalent means, a forward end 18 of the spring having a downward deflection into the opening 13, whereb the spring normally tends to rock the dog owny to the gripping position, but permits the dog to yield freely and to rock upwardly for the ready entrance of the pipe A, or other article to be pulled, and also to provide accommodation for different sizes of pipe, bolts or the like.
A co-acting gripping member is provided on the foot 11 at the forward end, in opposition to the gripping end of the dog 14. Said co-acting member in the present instance consists of a jaw 19, which has sliding movement in the foot, a pin 20 projecting from each side of the jaw being received in oblong slots 21 in the sides of the foot. To advance the jaw, or permit it to recede relatively to the forward end of the dog 14, a follower screw 22 is provided, which takes into the front end'23 of the foot and bears by its end against the back of the jaw, to receive the thrust of the latter. The dog and the jaw are in practice preferably provided respectively with teeth 14:, 20.
By the described construction pipes and bolts of varying size are readily accommo dated, the tool may be quickly and conven- Ill) passa iently adjusted to accommodate the particular article to be operated upon, and the end thrust of the dog against a solid portion of the tool prevents breakage of the parts under the strain of operation.
I Iaving thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A tool of the character described, comprising a handle member, and a foot at an angle thereto, the tool beingada'pted to be rocked on the heel of the foot, the said foot having a vertical through. opening for the e of the article to be pulled, a rearwardl y extending recess complementary with said opening, together with a gripping dog accommodated in said opening and recess, the do being vertically rockable and being also s idable to take a thrust bearing against the rear wall of the recess, there being a co-actin rippin member 0 'osed to the dog for the engagement of tl i article to be pulled.
2. A tool of the character described, comrising a foot and a handle member, the bot having a vertical opening extending therethrough to accommodate the article to be pulled, together with a gripping dog carried by the foot, at the opening thereof, there being a forwardly disposed bearing surface presented by the tool at the rear of the said dog, and said dog being slidable bodily transversely to the vertical opening to bear by its rear end against the said forwardly disposed bearing surface, and there being a co-acting gripping member opposed to and spaced from the front end of the dog,
copies of thin patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
for the engagement of the article to be pulled. I
3. A tool of the character described, comprising a foot and a handle member, the foot being formed with an opening to accommodate the article to be pulled, a sliding. dog dis osed transversely to the opening and forme with an oblong slot, a retaining pin extending transversely through the foot and through the slot of the do said dog being rockable on'the pin and s idable relatively thereto, the rear end of the dog beyond the pin being adapted to come to a bearing against the solid portion of the tool in the rear of the pin, and there being an opposing gripping member co-actingwith the dog.
4. A tool of the character described, comprising a foot and a handle member, the
