STRAP AND ANCHOR PLATE FULLER Filed Oct. 18, 1954 WWW-rims Emilien LEGAULT Michel LAVOIE ATTORNEYS United States Patent 2,837,311 STRAP AND ANCHOR PLATE FULLER Emilien Legault, Ville St. Pierre, Quebec, and Michel Lavoie, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application October 18, 1954, Serial No. 462,888 1 Claim. (Cl. 254-79 The present invention relates to a tool for removing the box straps and associated anchor plates which serve to secure boxes and similar freight torailway freight cars, ships, trucks and the like.
The conventional methods of removing anchor plates and straps consist'in using an ordinary hammer to remove, one by one, the nails securing the anchor plates, or to use a crowbar to remove the anchor plates bodily. These methods are time consuming and often cause damage to the wall or floor surfaces to which the anchor plates are secured.
Accordingly, the general object of the present invention is the provision of a strap and anchor plate puller which will obviate the above mentioned disadvantages.
An important object of the present invention is the provision of a strap and anchor plate puller of the character. described which will allow quick removal of said plates and straps without damaging the surface to which the anchor plates are secured.
Still another important object of the present invention is the provision of a tool of the character described provided with means such as in an ordinary hammer for removing nails.
Another important object of the present invention is the provision of a tool of the character described which pulls on the strap to which the anchor plate is secured in order to remove the latter.
Yet another important object of the present invention is the provision of a tool of the character described having means to quickly release the strap once the anchor plate is free of the wall surface to which it was secured.
The foregoing and other important objects of the present invention will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of the tool ac cording to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a partial side elevation of the same showing the strap gripping members in section and showing how the tool is used to pull the strap and anchor plate;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a strap and associated anchor plates arranged for securing a box or the like in position, said box being shown in dot and dash lines;
Figure 4 is a partial perspective view of the tool showing how it is used to remove nails; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the strap gripping means of the tool.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the tool, according to the present invention, is generally indicated at A, and is primarily designed to remove steel straps B and associated anchor plates D which are used to anchor boxes C or the like by means of nails F to the wall or floor E during transport in freight cars or the like. The tool A is designed to remove said anchor plates D by pulling on the strap B.
The tool A comprises a handle 1 terminated at one Patented June 3, 1 958 end by a head 2, in thegene'ral shape of a hammer, and which has a longitudinally curved fulcrum face 3 and which extends to the back to form a pair of curved ears 4 which are separated by a tapered space 5 for the insertion and removal of a nail F by forward rocking of the tool, as shown in Figure 4. The fulcrum face 3 of the head 2 forms the outer face of the ears 4 whereby the tool A may be rocked rearwardly on said fulcrum face 3, as shown in Figure 2, in a manner to cause the forward portion of the head 2 to describe a pivotal movement through a relatively wide angle.
The fulcrum face 3 merges with a first strap gripping face 6 extending at the front of the head 2 and substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle 1.
The yoke member 7 has one long leg 8 secured to the side face of the head 2 as by welding and has its short leg 9 extending to a point short of the strap gripping face 6 of the head 2 so as to provide a slot 10 for the insertion of the strap B in a position in which it is applied against said gripping face.
The cross leg 11 of the yoke member 7 is substantially parallel to and is outwardly spaced from the gripping face 6 of the head 2. A jaw member 12 is pivotally mounted within the yoke 7 on an axle 13 which is secured to the legs 8 and 9 and is parallel to the cross leg 11. One face of the jaw member 12 is provided with serrations 14 forming a strap gripping face which is complemental to the gripping face 6 of the head 2. The serrations 14 are preferably provided with diamond points to prevent wear.
A coil spring 15 urges pivotal movement of the jaw member 12 to engage the strap gripping face 6 of the head 2. One end of the coil spring 15 enters a bore 16 made in the jaw member 12 on the side of the axle 13 opposite from the fulcrum face 3 of the head 2. The other end of the coil spring 15 is inserted within-the opening 17 of the cross leg 11, said opening 17 being closed by a screw plug 18.
The jaw member 12 is provided with a short handle 19 projecting therefrom in the direction of the handle 1 of the tool A, and which serves to pivot the jaw member 12 out of engagement with the strap gripping face 6 and against the resistance of the spring 15.
To remove a strap B and associated anchor plate D, the strap B being wound around the anchor plate D in a manner as shown in Figure 2, the strap B is first cut by scissors S and the portion of said strap B adjacent the anchor plate D is brought into a position substantially at right angles to the anchor plate D. Then said portion of the strap B is inserted through the slot 10 in the space between the gripping surfaces 6 and 14. This insertion is facilitated by pivoting the jaw member 12 by means of the short handle 19. The tool A engages the strap B in a direction such that its fulcrum face 3 will overlie the anchor plate D as shown in Figure 2. The handle 1 is manipulated to cause rearward rocking of the tool A on its fulcrum face 3 whereby the anchor plate D is pulled from the surface E. During this movement, the jaw member 12 is in firm engagement with the strap B and prevents slipping of the same relatively to the head 2. The anchor plate D may be pulled out of the surface E by a single rocking movement of the tool A. To release the strap B from the tool after the anchor plate has been removed, the small handle 19 is actuated to disengage the jaw member 12 from said strap B.
- While a preferred embodiment according to the present invention has been illustrated and described, it is understood that various modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
We claim: A box strap and anchor plate puller comprising a sew/p111 d handle, a head formed at one end of said handle and providing a longitudinally curved fulcrum surface extending transversely of said handle, said head further forming an integral strap gripping surface at one end thereof extending in substantially parallel relationship to the handle, and across the entire width of said head, a yoke member securedto said head and projecting outwardly from said first gripping surface, a jaw member pivotally mounted on said yoke member and providing a second strap gripping surface complemental to the gripping surface of said head, said jaw member and said first gripping surface on said head being adapted to grip a strap between them at a portion of said strap adjacent said anchor plate whereby rocking movement of said head about its fulcrum surface in cooperation with the wall surface to which said anchor plate is secured will pull said anchor plate from said wall surface, said yoke member having the shape of a U providing a long leg and a o t leg v a d 01 s e ein secured to a s de face of said head, and said short leg terminating short of said first strap gripping surface to provide a space therebetween for the insertion of said strap, spring means to pivot said jaw member into engagement with the strap gripping surface of said head, a short handle upstanding from said jaw member and ladapted'to pivot said jaw member out .of engagement with said gripping surface of said head.
