To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THYRA ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salina, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention appertains to that type of invalid rests comprising a base frame and a rest frame mounted thereon and adapted to be held in an adjusted inclined position by means of a brace intermediate the two frames.

The invention is designed mainly as an arm rest, the rest frame being provided with a web peculiarly applied thereto so as to form a hammock-like support for a pillow, and extended to provide a suspension fold to which the pillow may be readily attached.

While the rest means is designed mainly to support an arm which has been injured or diseased, it is contemplated that the said means may be utilized for other purposes where the principle of construction and operation might be appropriately employed.

An especial object of the invention has been to so design the rest that the brace means by which the rest frame is held at adjusted positions is adapted to carry a looking member engageable with the rest and brace frames to hold said parts collapsed compactly together when not in use.

For a full understanding of the present invention reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the device collapsed. Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the same as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device arranged in operative position, the pillow adapted to be supported therefrom being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing more clearly the method of applying the locking member to the adjusting brace.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification A is the base frame and B the rest frame. These frames are approximately rectangular in shape and the sides of the base frame A are formed with the notches 1 at intervals in their length and 7 adjacent to the rear end of saidframe.

Hinges or similar connections 2 are used to attach the frame B to the frame A and are located at the front ends of said frames in such a manner that the frame B may readily fold down upon the frame A when the parts are collapsed as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5.

As above promised, the rest frame B has a hammock-like support 3 attached thereto, the same consisting of a web of canvas or similar. material secured to the opposite ends of the frame and to the sides by detachable strips 4 or equivalent means. From its point of attachment to the lower end of the frame the web of the support 3 passes upward beneath the upper or rear end of the frame B then over said end beneath the adjacent strip 4. This upper end of the said web is then folded upon itself to provide the loose suspension fold 5 the end of the web at this point being clamped beneath the rearmost strip 4 above that portion in direct contact with the rear end of the frame B. This suspension fold 5 is so arranged as to facilitate the ready pinning of a pillow or similar support thereto, it

being the intention that the arm of an in valid may rest directly on the pillow after the rest frame B has been adjusted properly.

Y The adjustment of the frame B is accomplished by the use of a brace C employed in a manner heretofore proposed in this art. Said brace C is of bail-like or U-form, its ends being provided with journals 6 mounted in suitable bearings 7 on the under surface of the frame B. The lower or outer end of the brace C is adapted to engage in any laterally alined pair of the notches 1 in an obvious manner to accomplish the desired results. On the cross piece C of the brace C is carried a small locking member 8 in the form of a double spring catch pivoted intermediate its ends to'said cross piece and formed with the end catches 9 manipulating handle for the brace should c the latter have to be handled from the rear ,between the frames for holding the rest;

over the last named end and folded upon "itself to provide a suspension fold, said sup-; port being slightly bellied intermediate the ends of the frame, and "means for attaching the support to the frame.

In an invalid rest, the combination of a base frame, a rest frame, a hinged connection between corresponding ends of said frames permitting the same to be collapsed one upon the other, a braceintermediate .Copies of this patent may be obtained for said frames for holding the rest frame in an adjusted pos1t1on, sa1d brace comprlsmg a cross bar and a locking member carried bysaid cross bar and engageable with the free ends of the frames to hold the latter in collapsed condition.

3. In an invalid rest, the combination of a base frame, a rest frame, a hinged connection between corresponding ends of said frames permitting the same'to be collapsed one upon the other, a brace member pivoted to the rest frame and of U-form comprising a cross bar, the base frame being provided w th notches to be engaged by sa1d cross bar of the brace, and a locklng member mter mediate the ends of said cross bar and comprising yielding catches cap-able of engaglng over the free ends of the frames when the latter are collapsed one upon the other to lock the frames together and preventmovement of the brace.
