ATTACHMENT' FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
incassa. l
To aZZfww/m, it may concern Be it known that I, CHAnLns l). SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marine City, in thecounty of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment lfor lamp burners. l
An object of my invention is' to providel an attachment for lamp burners or the like which prevents the lamp chimney from being smoked, and at the same time gives a bright light.
Another object of my invention is to provide an attachment for lamp burners which can be easily inserted under the burner cap of the burner and one which will spread theY iiame from the wick of the lamp so as to give the same a greater brightness.
A still further object of my invention is y to provide an attachment for lamp burners or the like which can be stamped from a single sheet of metal thereby obviating all unnecessary costs whatsoever in manufacturing the same, being merely bent at certain places to form my attachment.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention relates to such detailsl `of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp burner the burner cap being shown thrown open and my attachment being attached to said burner. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my attachment. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of my attachment. Fig. l is a plan view of the blank form before the same has been bent to form my attachment.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a single' piece of sheet metal 1 which is adapted to be stamped so that an opening 2 will be formed near the center thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. l this opening has slight extensions 3 at each end'thereof for a purpose that will be hereinafter fully described. Cut out portions 4 along both side edges are also formed during the Specification of Letters Eatent. y Application filediseptember 29, 1911. Serial No. 651,939. y

manufacture of the same. Said openings 2 and 3 and the cut out portions 41 may be formed at a single impression of a die or other cutting member. The member 1 is bentat opposite ends upwardly, as shown in Fig.A 1, so as to provide a base to rest upon a burner device yor body 6 separate therefrom, and so that said ends or riser portions will terminate yadjacent the top of the wickor other burner y,member 5, which issuitably supported by said burner 6. Said upwardly projecting ends or riser portions are also bent or curved as shown to permit a cap, presently to be referred to, to fit or close thereover. Pivoted to the burner body 6 is the usual burner cap '7 which when closed completely covers the attachment.
As will be realized, opening 2 is enlarged with respect tothe burner member 5 in order to provide forthe admission of air lto the burner member from below.
It will be readily seen that when the ends of my attachment are in a position as shownv in Fig. 2 they will tend to spread theflame which rises from the wick 5 so that the same will give much more light and at the same time will not smoke the chimney.
I desire to lay great stress upon the fact that my device is constructed from asingle piece of sheet metal and can be formed y the single impression of a die or other cutf ting member. It is also thought that it will be appreciated that my device can be manufactured at a very low cost.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1st- 1. In combination with a burner body, a burner member and an adjustable cap, an attachment for the purpose specified separate from said body and member and having a base portion resting on said burner body provided with an opening through which said burner member extends, said opening being enlarged with respect tothe burner member to provide for the admission of air through the opening, said opening also having an extension in which the burner member is positioned, riser portions extending upwardly from said base portion on oppo- 2. In combination With a burner member,
an rattachment for the purpose specified formed as an integral metallic article, `said, I
attachment provided intermediate its end edges With an opening through which said burner .member extends, said opening being o enlarged With respect to the burner member to provide for the admission of air through the opening, and said attachment having a plurality of notches along opposite sides for the purpose specified.
3.v In combination With a burner member,
an attachment for vided intermediate its end edges with an Vopening `through which said burner member f extends, said openingk being enlarged withy respect-to said burner to provide for the admission of air through the opening, said opening having a plurality of vextensions iny Which said burner member is located and positioned, said blank having :a plurality of the `purpose specied formed of a blank of metal, said blank pronotchesalong opposite sides orthe purpose specie'd.
