OIL-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14:, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH L. PENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glencoe, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an oil can and especially to the cap fitting upon said can.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view of an oil can, with the top applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the cap.
In the drawings, 1 represents a can provided with the usual neck upon which is screwed a cap 2. The cap is provided with a discharge spout 3 and within the cap is arranged a perforated diaphragm 4 having a central conical elevation 5 which opens upwardly and forms a valve seat. A pin 6 works loosely through the center of the top of the can and through a depending sleeve carried thereby and through the opening of the said cone, said pin having a cone valve 7 formed at its lower end, which valve 00- operates with the valve seat. At its upper, outer end the pin is provided with a head 8 and a coil spring 9 surrounds the outer por tion of the pin between the head and the top of the cap. When the pin is depressed the diaphragm to the cap and may be discharged through the spout. As soon as pressure of the thumb or fingeris removed from the head of the pin the spring then returns it to its normal position thus causing the cone valve to engage the valve seat, thus shutting off the discharge of oil.
The device can also be applied to bottles, jars or for other receptacles than those employed for holding oil.
What I claim is The combination of a can having a threaded neck, of a cylindrical threaded cap adapted to fit within said neck and to close the same, a discharge spout carried by the top of the cap, an inwardly depending sleeve carried centrally by the top of the cap, said cap having a bottom spaced from the top and provided with a valve seat, a valve stem extending upwardly through the cap and through said sleeve, and a coil spring arranged upon the upper portion of said stem and upon the exterior of the cap,
said spring normally holding said valve in engagement with its seat.
