JOHN TBAACH, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WITTEMANN BROTHERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SIPHON-HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 18, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonN BAACH, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Richmond, county of Richmond, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siphon-I-Ieacls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to heads for receptacles serving as containers for gaseous liquids or other beverages under pressure, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eflicient and reliable device having the appearance of the ordinary siphon top in common use.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a siphon-head which is so constructed that the fluid contained within the bottle will not contact with any portion of the head, except the nozzle portion thereof,
which latter, being separate therefrom, may be made of anysuitable non-corrosive metal or material.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a siphon-head in which the nozzle portion and operating parts may be readily removed therefrom in order to facilitate cleaning or the substitution of new parts for such as may have become worn or broken in consequence of use.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a siphon-head which is so e0nstructed that the same may be removed from the bottle without disarranging the removable nozzle portion and the mechanism for actuating the valve To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing one form of siphon-head constructed according to and embodying my said invention; the same being shown in position upon a bottleneck; Fig. 2 is a detail bottom view showing the siphon-head detached from the bottleneck; Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the nozzle detached from the head; Fig. 4 is a top view of said nozzle; Fig. 5 is a side view showing the construction of the means arranged within the head for actuating the valve, and Fig. 6 is a detail central section of the bushing for securing the nozzle with the head.
In said drawings, 10 designates a bottle of the usual construction having a neck 11 provided upon its outer edge with a rim 12.
13 denotes the head comprising a casing 14 having a reduced hollow portion 15 closed at its upper end. The inner side of the easing 14 is provided with screw threads.
16 denotes a nozzle comprising a horizontal portion 17 provided at its inner end with a head 18 having a reduced upper end 19 provided with a recess 20 therein.
21 denotes a flat circular flange extending from said head 18 and provided with a shallow central boss 22.
23 denotes a central vertical passage extending through said head from the recess 22 in its upper end to its lower end which terminates in an enlarged portion forming a valve seat 2 1.
25 denotes a rubber washer having a central opening, and disposed below the flange 21 of the head 18, and 26 denotes an annular screw-threaded bushing having an inwardly extending flange 27. The said bushing 26 is adapted to be screwed into the interior of the cap 14, and engage the under side of the washer 25, and hold the same firmly pressed against the under side of the flange 21. of the head 18, to maintain said head properly in position within the reduced upper portion 15 of the siphon-head, and at the same time maintain the nozzle 17 projecting through an opening 28 provided in the side of the casing 14. \Vithin the tubular portion 15 of i the head is disposed a stem 29 having its upper end 30 bifurcated to form a plurality of upwardly extending lugs 31, 31.
32, 32 denote washers corresponding substantially with the inner diameter of the tubular upper portion 15 of the siphon-head and disposed upon the stem 29, and intermediate said washers 32, 32 and surrounding the stem 29 is disposed a coil-spring 33.
34 denotes a rubber or other suitable packing disposed within the recess 20 in the head 18, and below the washer 32 arranged upon the lower end of the stem 29, which extends into the passage 22 in the head 18.
35 denotes a tube, preferably made of glass, provided at its upper end with a tube supporting member or top 36 having an enlarged portion 37 adjacent to its upper end provided with a laterally extending annular flange 38. Within the stepped inner end of the top 36 is arranged a spider 39 adapted to support an elliptical valve 40 mounted upon a stem 41 extending into the lower end of the opening 22 provided in the head 18 of the nozzle 17, and engaging the lower end of the stem 29 arranged in the tubular portion 15. lhe head 13 and the tube 35 with its head 36 are maintained properly positioned upon the neck of the bottle by means of a split collar 42 adapted to be fitted upon the outer side of the bottle-neck below the.
To operate the device in order to discharge the fluid from the bottle 10, it merely becomes necessary to press the outer end of the lever 45, thereby forcing the stem 29 downwardly, and this, in turn, presses downwardly the stem 41 and valve 40, and permits the fluid to pass upwardly through the tube 35 past the valve 40, the opening 22, and through the nozzle 17. As soon as the pressure upon the outer end of the lever 45 is: released, the pressure of the gas within the bottle 10 will cause the valve 40 to seat against its seat 24 of the flange 21 of the nozzle. 7
In order to remove the top from the bottle, it merely becomes necessary to unscrew the siphon-head 13 and release the same from its engagement with the split collar 42. Hereupon the nozzle 17 may be removed from the head by unscrewing the bushing 26 which is provided at its opposite lower edges with recesses 26, 26 to receive the ends of a spanner or othersuitable implement. When the head 26 has been removed from the casing 14, the washer 25 can be removed and the nozzle 17 then slipped inwardly and downwardly within the we ing and withdrawn from the head 13.
It will be observed that by means of my improved construction, I am enable to make a siphon-head comprising the casing 14, and an upper portion 15 of any metal or material desired, since the fluid contained within the receptacle does not come in contact with any portion thereof. The nozzle 17, and its head 18 having the passage 23 therein, only to be made of tin, pewter, or
other non-corrosive material since it is the. only portion of the upper head with which the contents of the receptacle contacts in its passage from the tube 35. Further, it will be noted that by reason of my improved construction, I am enabled to remove the siphon-head readily from the bottle without disturbing the nozzle 17, or the adjustment of the parts for actuating the valve contained within the upper portion of said head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A siphon-head comprising a casing having an internally threaded lower end, a recessed portion above said threaded end, and an opening in its side, means for securing said casing to a bottle, a separable nozzle extending through the opening in said casing, a head having an opening extending therethrough communicating with said nozzle and a valve seat at the lower end of said opening, a valve disposed below said valve seat having a stem extendin upwardly into the opening in said head, a flange extending laterally from the base of said head, a packing disposed below said head, an annular screw-threaded member secured within the threaded lower end of said casing and en gaging said packing for securing said flange at the end of said nozzle in position within the recessed portion of said casing, a tube, means for supporting said tube and inclosing said valve, a stem arranged within said casing above said head and engaging the stem on said valve therein, and means engaging said valve stem for actuating said valve, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county of New York, the twenty-fifth day of October, one thousand nine hundred and ten. JOHN BAACH, JR.
