To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. SOMERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Montgomery, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a stationary jaw and a movable jaw with its shank movably secured in a rocking bracket and cooperating with said bracket and the shank by which the stationary jaw is carried.
Another object is to provide a wrench of this character which may be readily adjusted and the bracket of which will be resiliently retained in proper position to secure the movable jaw in adjusted position.
Another object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and increase the efliciency and durability thereof.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention will be more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings attached to and forming a part of this application.
In the drawings: Figure]. is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-43 Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the manner of adjusting the movable aw.

Referring more particularly to the above drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, 10 designates the shank or handle, upon the forward end of which is carried the rigid or stationary jaw 11 and which has the rearwardly directed teeth 12 upon its outer edge, at the forward end of said shank, it being understood that said forward end is wider than the remainder of the shank.
The movable jaw 13 has the shank portion 14: with the forwardly directed teeth 15 upon its inner edge for cooperation with the teeth 12, as will be clearly seen. The shank portion 14 of the movable jaw 13 is adapted for longitudinal movement through and rocking movement in the main portion of the rocking sleeve 16, which sleeve is provided with the depending cars 17 on its opposite sides, through which ears 17 and the forward portion of the handle or shank 10 is positioned sleeve 16 rocks. The rear portion of the bracket 16 is reduced and extended toward the rear end of the handle or shank 10, as shown at 19 upon opposite sides of said shank. The extended portions 19 are connected by means ofthe transverse wall. 20 at the free ends of said extended.portions and the pin 21 depends from the rear end of said wall and has, the rear end, of the curved leaf spring 22 secured thereto while the forward end of the spring presses against the outer edge of the shank 10 to yieldingly hold the wall 20 spaced from said edge of the shank 10.
It will be under stood that both ends of the main portion of the sleeve 16 are open to allow proper operation of the movable jaw and that movement of the movable jaw shank 141: in a forward. direction is limited. by engagement of a lug 23 with the rear tooth 12 uponthe shank 10 while rearward movement of the shank 141-. is limited by on gagement of the rear end of this shank and the lug 221 with the forward edge of the transverse wall 20.
The l'n'acket 16 carries the inwardly directed lugs 34: at its forward end for engagement in the grooved sides of the movable jaw shank 1 1 and said jaw shank carries the lugs upon its opposite sides for engagement against the lugs 24 to prevent accidental removal of the shank 14 from the main portion of the sleeve 16 when the latter is swung upon the pin 18, as will. be clearly apparent. The nobs or enlargements 26 are formed upon thtc inner face of the outer wall of the main portion of the sleeve 16 at the opposite ends thereof, to prevent binding of the outer edge of the shank 1 1 against the sleeve.
It will be apparent that this wrench may be readily adjusted and it will be understood that the transverse wall 20 is curved for engagement by the operators thumb. It will also be understood that the sides of the sleeve slope downwardly from the rear end the pivot pin 18 upon which the,

Vhen it is desired to adjustthe wrench, the Wall 20 is depressed by the thumb of the hand grasping the handle or shank 1.0; thus raising the movable jaw shank 14- and disengaging the teeth 15 thereof from the teeth 12. The movable jaw 13 and its shank 141- may then be moved in either direction to the main poi'tiono'f the bracket 16 to the pmper position; it being understood that the lugs 24 engage the'upper edge of the shank 14F and serve to iaise said shankes the bracket 16 swings or rocks upon the pivotpin; 18.
