T all 107mm t may conc-era Be it known that I, PETER NneovA'rroH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-l-Iungary, residing at Biloxi, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Handling Seines, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to an improvement in seining apparatus.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a mechanism for facilitating the handling of seines.
In the drawings: Figure l is a top plan view of the device attached to a boat. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device removed from the boat. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the block which is arranged on the under face of the beam.
The device is intended for use with a boat or float, the boat or float being provided with rollers 11 and 12, under which the seine passes as the same is hauled in the boat.
10 designates a beam one end of which is apertured to receive a cable 14 which is secured to the boat. The lower end of this beam is tapered and adapted to extend within the river bed in order to steady the beam and hold the same in position. Secured to either side of said beam at a point adjacent its lower or tapered end are blocks 15 and 16 through which extend shafts 17, said shafts extending into the beam 10, those portions of said shafts within the beam being screw-threaded. Supported on the outer end portion of each of said shafts is a sleeve 19 and arranged on each of said sleeves-is a roller 20, said roller being provided with the enlarged head 21 and formed with the contracted neck portion 22, the lead line of the sei-ne resting within the contracted portion.
Secured by bolts or the like to the under face of the beam is a block 24 having a recess 25 in its upper face, the beam being formed with a corresponding recess 26, the block and the beam being also formed with registering grooves 27 and 28.
Arranged transversely of the beam is a shaft 29 which is supported between the block 24 and the beam, the shaft 29 being capable of a movement longitudinally of the beam 10. The shaft 29 is held against longitudinal movement in one direction by a head 29 at one end and a nut 29 at its other end.
Disposed longitudinally of the beam and secured to its under face is a rod 30 the looped end portion 31 of which embraces the shaft 29 centrally, said rod lying in the grooves 27 and 28, the loop and shaft being free to move in the recesses 25 and 26 as the rod is moved. The other end of the rod 30 is connected with a bell crank lever 32 which is pivotally supported within the cut-away portion 33 of the beam, the long arm of the lever 32 being apertured and receiving a cable by means of which the same may be moved on its pivot. It will thus be noted that by moving the lever 32 on its pivot the shaft 29 may be moved longitudinally of the beam 10. Rollers 34 are mounted on the end portions of shaft 29 and by pushing these rollers downwardly from rollers 20 the lead lines can readily be inserted between the rollers 20 and 34 and in the grooves 22. By then pulling through a cable on lever 32 the rollers 34 can be drawn toward rollers 20, thereby holding the lead lines in position.
The lead lines pass over the rollers 34 and under the rollers 2O as shown in Fig. 2 the same being continued upward and passed over the rollers 1l and 12 which are supported by the boat. It will be noted from this construction that in handling the seine the same may be either hauled in or fed out, the rollers properly directing the lead lines of the seine.
A guard 35 is arranged on the under face of the beam, said guard consisting of the wire frame 36 which is bent upon itself and on which is arranged the netting 37 ,the free ends 36 of the member 36 which constitutes the frame extending within the block 24, the frame intermediate its ends being secured at the point 40 to the beam 10. The guard 35 constitutes means for preventing Shrimps or the like from escaping while the seine is being hauled.
In Fig. 3 a small pin 4l has been shown suspended from the upper end of the frame or guard or by a short length of rope. This pin constitutes means for measuring the depth of the water prior to tying the apparatus to the side of the boat. n
It will be noted from the foregoing that a construction of this character provides means Whereby the iish are prevented from escaping While the seine is being hauled. Attention is called to the fact that the rollers n guide the lead lines of the seine together effectually closing the Web as the seine is being hauled in.
What is claimed is z- Apparatus of the class described including a beam, rollers supported thereby, a block` secured yto the beam, a shaft supported between the block and beam, means for moving i -the shaft longitudinally of the beam, rollers carried by the shaft, and a guard including a'net supported frame, the end portions of the frame being secured to the block and the intermediate portion of the frame to the beam. v c
