HOG-HOLDING MACHINE.
Specification bFIJeEtiS i atent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
Application filed February 5, 1917. Serial No. 146,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. CORINGTON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at the city of Faucett, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Holding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an original and improved hog-holding machine in which a stationary frame operates in conjunction with a raising and rotary cage: and the objects of my invention are; first, to provide a method for catching and holding a hog; second, for raising and rotating a hog for the purposes of ringing, vaccinating or castration.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is an isometric view of the dev1ce.
Fig. 2, is a side view of the device, showing the hog raised and fastened ready to be rotated to position for ringing, vaccinating or castrating.
Fig. 3, is a side view of the device showing the hog in position for vaccination or ringm Fig. 4, is afront end view showing the hog in position for vaccination or ringing.
Fig. 5, shows the details of a pawl and ratchet, used in holding the cage in position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The frame, A, is composed of the floor, A and on either side of said floor are upright guards, A", which form a chute, B, said chute being closed at one end by a gate, B, constituting the stationary part of the dev1ce.
The cage, C, is composed of a plurality of loops, D D- resting on the said floor, A, with the top ends secured on either side to top of cage, E, on which is rigidly attached a hollow block, F, and said hollow block, F, has a pinion f a pawl and ratchet g and a crank IL on one side which operates in rigidly mounted on said plate, G. On the 430 outer end of said turning rod, J, is rigidly attached a turning crank, K. On either side of said vertical posts, I, and rigidly attached to turning rod J, is apawl and ratchet, L, constituting the rotary part of the device.
By driving the hog in said open end, M, onto the said floor, A and over the said loops, D D- as shown in Fig. 1, and by turning crank, it, the said cage, 0, raises the said hog up and against the said plate, G, which device is securely locked by said pawl and ratchet, g, holding the said hog in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2. Then by turning the said turning crank, K, which is locked by said pawl and ratchet, L, said hog may be rotated and securely fastened for ringing, vaccinating, castrating, etc., as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
By releasing the said pawl and ratchet, L and turning the said turning crank, K, back to the former position and releasing said pawl and ratchet, g allowing the loops, D D, to lower to the said floor, A, and opening the said gate, B, said hog is released.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of a hog-holding machine with a frame, provided with a floor so adapted that an animal can be driven thereon, a pair of vertical posts, a cage provided with a top, a plurality of loops secured to said top and adapted to raise and secure said animal, a hollow block located on top of said cage, a vertical rack adapted to operate in said block, which vertical rack operates said cage, a pinion mounted on said block and acting in cooperation with said vertical rack, which pinion is operated by a crank, which crank is controlled by a pawl and ratchet adapted to raise and hold said cage securely in place while being rotated, a scalloped plate located within said loops which scallops of the plate cooperate with said loops, a turning rod rigidly attached to said plate and adapted to operate on said vertical 10 posts, a turning crank which operates said turning rod and used for rotating the rotary part of said device, for the purposes specified and substantially designed as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenc of two witnesses.
JAMES W. CORINGTON.
