IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,699, dated June 5, 1877 application filed May 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID T. MGOLEL LAN and THOMAS J. McBRInE, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-(lovers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to covers for barrels, casks, and the like, and is an improvement on Patent N 0. 184,976, issued to us December 5, 1876.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a cover provided with our said invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the cover.
The invention consists in the parts and combinations, as will hereinafter be more fully specified and claimed, wherein A is a portion of a lid or cover of any suitable material and fashion. The lid or cover of a barrel is divided into two parts, so that when one part thereof is secured to the barrel the other, hinged or attached thereto, may be thrown back thereon, and. the barrel be thus partially opened. To one section A of the lid or cover is attached a frame or guides, B B. Said frame may be constructed in one piece, or of several parts, separately attached, as may be desired, and is of any suitable form necessary to accommodate the parts, hereinafter to be described. G G are bars of such a length as to accommodate the inner shape of the barrel. The .double screw-threaded rod D, which moves the bars 0 0, has rigidly secured to its center the bevel-cogged wheel E, gearing with the bevel-pinion F on the short vertical shaft G, the upper end of which shaft passes through and is exposed above the cover of the barrel, and is provided with a square body so as to allow the shaft to be readily turned by a key or crank, in order to operate the bars within the barrel or tub. These bars have heretofore been operated by means of a thumbnut on the rod D, operated by-the fingers after passing the hand within the barrel.
The operation of the device is as follows: The lid A, provided with the parts hereinbefore described, is placed upon the barrel, and the screw D is turned by means of the gearing until the points of the fasteners U engage with the sides of the barrel. When this is accomplished it will be apparent that the lid A is securely fastened to the top of the barrel. Whenever necessary, the barrel may be opened by swinging back the loose section of the lid hereinbefore mentioned.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lid-f'astener, consisting of the bars 0 O and screw-rod D, provided with the rigidlyfixed cog-wheel E, in combination with the Vertical shaft G passing through and above the lid, and provided with the bevel-pinion F, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
