Description

(No ModeL) E. MODLIN.
CHICKEN 0001 No. 340,144. Patented Apr 20. 1886.
Toall whom it may concern:
' and particularly pointed out in the claims.
UNTTED STATES PATENT ri ten.
ENOOH MODLIN, OF EDINA, MISSOURI.
CHICKEN-COOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,144, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed November 20, 1885. Serial No. 183,414. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ENOCH MODLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edina, in the county of Knox and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Coops, of which the following is'a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chicken-coups.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth,
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coop, the cover to the outer casing being raised and the movable portion elevated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the outer casing or housing being broken away to show the interior disposition of parts. Fig. 3 is an end elevation with all the doors closed and the movable portion elevated.
In the drawings, A represents the outer casing or housing of the coop, which may be of any desired form and of any suitable ma terial. It is, however, made preferably of wood and composed of sides formed of wooden slats in order to admit air to the fowls. \Vithin this outer casing is inclosed the box B, which is of the same general contour as the outer casing, and is of a size to be inclosed by the said outer casing. This interior portion, B, is provided at convenient points with a door, B, for the entrance of the fowl, and the outer casing, A, is provided with a door, D, hinged as shown, through which the fowl may be removed from the top,if desired.
E is a Windlass, mounted in suitable hearings in the casing A and extending across the same, and is provided upon one end with the crank F, and also with the ratchet-wheehwhich is engaged by a pawl fastened upon the casing, and in this manner the movable portion B may be secured at any desired point.
The movable portion B is provided with four guides, G,which encircle the legs H,upon
which the portion A is supported. The portion B is connected to the Windlass by means of the rope K, and through this medium is capable of being raised off the ground for the purpose of freeing it from vermin, and rendering the fowl safe from small animals, and also to facilitate the removal of the fowl through the top of the coop.
I represents the second Windlass 0n the outside of the coop and at right angles to the first, and is provided with pawl and ratchet for securing it in position. It is connected with movable portion B by means of the rope K, which passes over suitable guides, k k. This second Windlass is protected from rain, 850., by means of the cover L, secured above it.
The second Windlass serves to cause the movement of the box or movable portion B to be very even and easy, and at the same time it forms a look upon the first windlass,'so that it the first should become accidentally released the box B would still be suspended. The second Windlass also serves to render the coop proof against accident. When heavilyloaded with poultry,a single set of ropes might break butlwith' the two windlasses and two sets of ropes no fall would occur, and the coop is 'always ready for use in winding up or letting down.
From the foregoing it will be clear that by use of my coop the fowl may keep free from vermin, &c., by simply raising the coop otf the ground, and also that the fowl may be raised into safe position at nights; also, that they can be readily removed through the top by simply raising the portion B by one-or the other of the windlasses.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s.
1. The combination, in a chicken-coop, of the outer casing, A, supported upon legs, the interior portion, B, provided with guides encircling said legs, and means, substantially as described, for raising or lowering the inner section.
2. The combination, in a chicken-coop, of the outer casing, A, provided wit-h depending legs, the inner movable portion, B, provided with guides encircling said legs, andthetwo windlasses moulfted in the casing A, and the tion B by means of ropes, substantially as deropes connecting the said movable section and scribed. the Windlass. In testimony whereof I alfix my signature 3. The combination, in a chicken-coop, of in presence of two witnesses.
5 the outer housing or casing,A,supported upon his legs and provided with a hinged top,the inner ENOCH X MODLIN- movable portion,R, provided with guides. encircling the supporting-legs of the casing A, Wituesses:' and the windlasses at right angles to each 0. D. JONES,
10 other, and connected with the movable por- JOHN BUNCE.
