J. W. ISBERG. ROPE CLAMP. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 1.
' 1,026,587; Patented May14,1912.

ROPE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 9, 1911.
Patented May 14, 1912. Serial No. 625,979.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB W. ISBERG, citizen of the United States, residing at West Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the present invention is the provision of means whereby a rope or cord may be secured either by subjecting the same to tension or by releasing the same. The invention consists essentially of a frame and a clamp adjustable in the frame by means of an inclined movement whereby the rope, cord or like part may be secured so as to be held in the required adjusted po sition or automatically released to admit of the rope or like part moving freely.
In the specific construction the clamp consists of a frame comprising a base and side members, the latter having slots which are arranged at an inclination to the base of the frame and a roller mounted in said slots and adapted to confine the rope, cord or like part, said roller being controlled in its movements by proper manipulation of the rope so as to efiect a clamping of the rope or an automatic release thereof.
The invention further consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, and illus trated in the accompanying drawings and finally claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of the specification; Figure 1 is a front View of a rope clamp showing the relative position of the parts when the rope is made secure; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device; Fig. 3 is a vertical central section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 indicates the rope, cord or like part with which the invention is adapted to cooperate. The device comprises a frame which in transverse section is substantially of U-form and comprises a base 2 and side pieces 3. This frame may be constructed in any manner. The side pieces 3 have longitudinal slots 4 which are relatively inclined to the plane of the base 2. A hook 5 or like rope engaging device is formed upon one of the side pieces 3 atapoint above the inclined slot 4. When it is required to secure the rope 1 or like part the same is drawn upward about the clamp device and over the hook or engaging device 5 and drawn downward with the result that the upward pull upon the main portion of the rope or analogous part 1 causes the clamp device 6 to move in the inclined slots 4 and to clamp the part 1 between it and the base 2.
The clamp device 6 may be of any construction and preferably consists of a roller whose journals are mounted in the inclined slots 4. It is to be understood that the roller 6 and journals may be one part or may be separately formed.
In the operation of the invention the clamping device is placed upon the rope, cord or like part 1 with the latter passing between the base 2 and the roller or clamp device 6. Under normal conditions the rope is adapted to play freely through the frame. To clamp the rope the end thereof is bent about the clamp device 6 and is passed over the hook or engaging device 5 and drawn upon with result that the clamp device 6 is moved upwardly in the inclined slots 4 and caused to bind upon the rope and clamp the same between the base 2 and the member 6. To release the rope the same is disengaged from the hook 5 and drawn downward thereby causing the clamp device 6 to move down ward in the inclined slots 4, the latter by reason of their inclination causing the roller 6 to move away from the base 2 and releasing the rope which is adapted to move freely through the frame. It is to be understood that the clamp device may be secured to any part to which the rope is adapted to be sesecured when moved to the required position. The clamping device may be advantageously used in connection with the rigging of vessels or with hoisting tackle generally or in any position requiring a rope or like part to be quickly secured and adapted to be instantly released.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are Within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A rope clamp comprising a frame of substantially U form in cross section, said frame embodying a base and side pieces, the latter having slots arranged in a plane inclining to the plane of the base, one of the side pieces having a hook at the end adjacent the end of the frame where the ends of the inclined slots are nearer the base for the rope to pass over, and a roller having journals at its ends which are mounted in the inclined slots of theside pieces of the frame, said roller serving to clamp the rope against the base of the frame when the loose end of the rope is drawn upon after being passed over the said hook.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB W. ISBERG.
