Description
PATENTED MAY 1 W. F. LAWS. TETHER. APPLIGTION FILED Nox/.9, 1905.
(I. :Sm
attenua UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Batented May 1,1906.
Application led November 9,1905. Serial No. 286,5 90.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRANKLIN LAws, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Governors Island, in the county of Swain and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T-ethers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to tethers, and more particularly to that class known as Htravelers, onel of the` objects being to provide simple and inexpensive means for tethering or picketing an animal for the purpose of grazing and the like, so that it may traverse a considerable area without danger of becoming entangled in the tethering-rope.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, as well as the structural features by means of which these objects are attained, will be made clear by an examination of the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference-numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete device, showing one end of the tetheringrope connected with a cow 5 and Fig. 2 is a detail of parts. l
1 designates vertical standards or uprights, having their lower ends firmly embedded in the earth, so as to be held securely in position. Stretched between the standards is a rope or cable 2, along which is ada ted to travel a pulley 3, from which depen s a ball and socket 4, having suspended therefrom the pulleys 5 and,6. Secured to the pulley 5 is the tethering-rope 7, which supports the pulley 6, and from said pulley 6 a weight 8 is suspended, said pulleys 5 and 6 andthe tethering-rope 7 Jforming, in effect, a block-andtackle arrangement. The weight 8 is only suliciently large to keep the rope 7 taut and may be varied according to the strength or size of the animal tethered. In order that said animal may not pass around the uprights 1, and thus become fastened in any manner or its movementslimited thereby, I provide the blocks 9, which are provided with a longitudinal groove 10, through which the rope or cable 2 extends, and also with set or thumb screws 1 1, whereby said blocks maybe tightened to grip the rope or cable 2 in such manner as to be held securely'in position. As the pulley 3 travels along said rope or cable in either direction it comes in contact with one of said blocks 9 and is stopped thereby, so that the extent of the travel of the pulley 3 is limited according to the points at which said blocks are secured on said rope r`2. As the animal moves about over the ground the ball-and-socket arrangement 4 admits ofthe rotation of the pulleys 5 and 6. Consequently the rope 7, leading from the neck of the animal, cannot become entangled in the arrangement of parts held suspended from the rope or cable 2.'
The construction and operation of this device, it is believed, will be obvious from the foregoing description, and further explanation is not deemed necessary.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a device of the character described, vertical uprights, a cable stretched between said uprights and held suspended thereby, a
pulley adapted to travel along said cable, a plurality of blocks each having a longitudinal groove therein to span the cable, setscrews arranged in the blocks and adapted to bring the edges on each side of the groove closer together to grip the cable and thereby hold the blocks in adjusted position, and to release the edges to permit of adjustment of the blocks longitudinal of the cable, the blocks being adapted to limit the travel of the pulley, a second pulley, a ball-and-socket connection between said pulleys, a tetheringrope having one end depending from the second-mentioned pulley and the other end passing o'ver it and thence t\ the animal whereby said animal is tethered, and a weighted pulley engaging the tethering-rope whereby the same is held taut against the movements of the animal.
2. Adevice of the character described coml movement of said pulleys with respect to 11o IOO each other and having a loose or link oonneotially as described and `for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afHX signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
