WASHLlNE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,607, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed Octobtrl, 1902. Serial N6. 125,508. (No model.)
T at whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M; VVOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in VVashline-Fasteners, of
i which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Washlinc-fasteners, and has for its object the providing of a simple, cheap, and durable fastener by means of which the washline may be readily and conveniently attached to a wall or post and stretched in any desirable direction without the necessity of tying knots; and my invention will be readily understood from the following description and claim and from the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device having a washline fastened thereto and stretched in a given direction from one side of the fastener. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my improved device. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same shown in connection with a washline, partly insection. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of my improved device, taken in the plane of the groove, showing the washline in position.
A represents the body part of my improved washline-fastener, having a groove B around its periphery. The groove B has outwardlydiverging faces I) 5, making the groove of wedge form. A washline C is adapted to be passed around and lie in the groove, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the washline passing more than a complete circuit around the groove and lapping in the groove, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. D is a lug which projects from the body part adjacent to the groove and longitudinally of the body part and longitudinal plane of the groove. The lug bulges outwardlyin adirection transverse of the groove, as shown at E. It also has a curved contactface at each side of its middle, as shown at F F, which contact-faces are curved or rounded transversely, as shown at G G, for presenting a curved surface to the washline when the latter is stretched for preventing damage to the washline. The washline may be wrapped around the groove in the direction of the arrow a, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1,
in which case the washline as it leaves the device will be guided bythe contact-face F to one side of the median line of the lug, or it may be wrapped around the groove in the opposite direction, (shown by the arrow a,) in which case it will as it leaves the device he guided by the contact-face F on the other side of the median line of the lug, thus affording a self-clamping agency for the washline when wrapped in either direction, having curved contact-faces for the washline at both sides of the middle of the lug from which the washline may be stretched in any direction.
The washline may thus be received from any direction and be stretched from the fastener in any direction without the necessity of knotting or danger of injury to the washline. The washline being wrapped around the groove and lapped behind the lug is clamped by the lap in the groove, strain on the washline only tending totighten its hold. The body part has a second lug I.
The fastener is secured to the wall or post by means of screws passing through the holes K K.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, a washline-fastener comprising a body part having-a groove in the periphery of the body part, the groove having diverging side faces, witha lug projecting from the body part adjacent to and longitudinally beyond the groove, said lug having a curved contact-face for the rope on each side of the median line of the lug, constructed and arranged for permitting the rope to be wrapped around the groove'in either direction and to be received by one of said curved contactfaces of the lug for changing the direction in which the rope is stretched from either side of the median line of the lug.
In witness whereof I have signed my name hereto in the presence of two subscribing wit- Witnesses:
HENRY O. KOLDE, AUeUsT F. HERBSLEB.
