Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS BURR KELLOGG, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEM ENT IN BLOTTlNG-PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 10,245, dated December 20, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom it 1v1/wy concern.
' Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS BURR KEL- LOGG, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blotting Pads for Book-Keepers` Use, of which the following hand; and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation.
A is the wooden part of the pad. Each end is provided with a wedge-shaped notch or recess, a a', into which the ends of the blottingpaper b (whichrst passes over` the bottom of the pad) are received, and secured there by tightly-tting Wedges c c. These are retained in place by an elastic band, d, which is fastenedto each of these Wedges, and then passes tightly, centrally, (lengthwisa) over the top ofthe body of the pad. Slanting recesses or slots e e are formed on the top of the padone at each end-to receive and retain the elastic band d, and to give it greater tension in holding wedges c in place. In order to retain the entire pad on the ball of the left hand, I attacha band, B, generally elastic, to each end of the pad by means of rods or rivets ff', or their equivalents. This passes over the back of thehand. To prevent the pad slipping forward or back, I attach to the first band a short band, C, which passes between the thumb and forenger, as shown in Fig. l, which retains the device in place, and leaves the fingers of the hand perfectly free to turn over leaves or pick up the various articles a book-keeper requires while the right hand' is engaged with the pen.
I am acquainted with a blotting-pad and hand-rest77 patented by P. Gorsline, April 20, 1869, which shows a single strap attached to a plate, and passing across the iingers.
The special features of novelty in my invention consist in an elastic band for holding the ,Wedges in the recesses in the end of the pad,
to retain the blotting paper, which can be easily replaced when used up, and in the peculiar arrangement of an additional stra-p for retaining the blotter on the hand therefor.
What I-claim isl. In a blotting-pad having wedge-shaped notches ct a. in each end, and corresponding Wedges, c c', tting therein, the elastic band (l and recesses e e on top, by which the wedges are retained in place, for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. In combination with the block A and band B, the band C, to it on the hand between the thumb and forefinger, so as to retain the pad on the ball of the hand and to prevent Slipping, as hereinbefore specified.
In wit-ness whereof I have hereunto signed J. R. DRAKE, C. N. WooDWARD.
