WILLIAM HENRY BLACKFOBD, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BURIALGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1914.
Application fi led August 29, 1913. Serial No. 787,274.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BLA0K- Folio, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Garments, of which the following is a specificatio'n, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to burial garments, and the object thereof is to provide a garment of this class the construction of which is such that it may be easily placed ona body that is being prepared for burial; a further object being to provide a garment of the class specified which may be used either as an outer garment for use in preparing a female body for burial, or as an undergarment or shirt in the operation of preparing a male body for burial.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my improvement applied as an outer garment for use in preparing a female body for burial; said drawing being a back view of the garment, and in carrying my invention into effect, I provide a garment of the class specified comprising a body portion a, a skirt portion Z) and sleeves c.
In the accompanying drawing the body and skirt portion are formed integrally, but said parts may be formed separately and be connected in the usual manner. The body portion a, of the garment is also provided with a neck member (Z of any preferred construotion, and said garment is open centrally and longitudinally of the back, as shown at e, and this opening extends through the neck member d. The sleeves c are also open centrally and longitudinally of the back, as shown at f, and the sleeve openings coinmunicate with a transverse back opening 9. The opening in the back of the neck may be closed by ribbons or tape it which may be tied in any desired manner, and the openings in the backs of the sleeves may be similarly closed, as shown at 2', as may also the openings in the backs of the sleeves where they connect with the transverse opening 9 in the back of the body of the garment, as shown at j, and centrally of the back of the body of the garment the opening 6, which extends longitudinally of the garment, and the opening 9, which ranges transversely of the back of the garment, may be also closed in a similar manner as shown at 76, or these various openings may be closed by hooks and eyes or in any preferred manner.
A garment made in this manner may be easily applied to a body which is being prepared for burial, and as hereinbefore stated, it will be understood that burial shirts for men may be formed in this manner as may also outer garments or robes for women, and my improved burial garment may be made of any preferred material, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A burial garment the back of which is provided with a central longitudinal opening which extends through the neck portion thereof and through the bottom thereof, the sleeves of said garment being also provided with central longitudinal back openings, and the back of the garment with a transverse opening which communicates with the sleeve openings and back openings.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this twenty-first day of August 1913.
