Be it known that I, EUGENE P. ConwiN, of' Wash-Y ington, in the. county of '.Lazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and val uabie Improvement -in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' theconstruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed-drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and iguresof reference marked thereon.

My invention has relation to trace or tagbuckles;

It consists in theconstructionand nov-el arrangei ment Of devices, v.whereby 'a buckle is formed which will-.hold the truce-strapsecurely without the use ofa tongue, and therefore obviating the necessity. of weakening the trace-strap by perfm'a-ting it..

lhe letter A ofthe drawing designates the side bars of my buckle, secured at one end to the journals o rpivot-pu ofthe cam-lever C, and connected at the other Aend by :t stout connecting-bar, B.

B represents a broad serpentine compressing-lever, pivot-ed to the side ybars A, a. little forward ot' their .in iddleportionJ The curve changes four times in its length;

'C represents the small cain-lever which is placed at the rear end of the buckle. 'It is designed to press on the trace-strap with its forward edge with great force when the strap is extended by the weight. The straightening ofthe strap causes an outward deviation of the long arm ot' the cmu-lever C, and therefore Lits .stout arm or forward-biting edge is moved inthe opposite direction.

From this description it will appear kthat'the trace- I strap is secured at two points in thelengt-h ot' thebridge-lever, bythe pressure of the cani-lever O, and bythe biting surface s of the har D. Sometimes l prej fer to add n second Cain-lever, to secure the free end of the strap, the action ot' which issimilar to that it the lever C.

Having thus described my' invention,

I claimi The combination of the-serpentine lever B and canilever G with the sides A and bar D, the last being provided with a biting surface, z, as specified.
