Letters Patent N0. 110,063, deted December 13, 1870.
- IMPROVEIVIENT m mussss.
l'ho Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and mak.ing wart cf the same.
T0 all whom tt may concwn Be it known that I, CHARLES MIORRILL, of the 'city of New York, in the county und. State of New York, have invented a. certain riew ancl useful Improvement in Trusses; and I hereby declare that the following is a. fnll, clear, and exaet description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing whioh forms partof this speeific ation.
My invention consists in an improved hernial truss co1hposed of a frame of novel oonstruetion, provided with two pads, orone pad und an equivalent for the other, (all such parts being struck up from a single piece of metal) and a band or other suitable means t'or fastening the same to the body, whereby I am eriabled to produce a truss, efficient in all respects, ab an exceedingly low oost, und one Which will retain its proper position on the person 0f the wearer withont vexatious and annoying appendages, such es spI-ings, or a. mnltiplicity of bands, which are used. to cause the pad or pads to properly press against the rupturecl part or parts.
In the accompanying drawing- Fignre 1 is .a front levation of a double-padded trnss constrnoted according to my invention.
' Figure2 is a vertieal neutral section thereof, taken 011 the plane of the line x x, fig. 1.
'lhe tru ss I have illnstrated is designed for the use cf a person having a rnp ture in or near eaeh groin, und is therefore pro'vided with two pads proper.
A A designate the pa.ds;
B, the horizontal bar of the frarne;
0 E, thevgrtical bars of the franie; and
D, the lower connecting-bar.
' All these parts may be stampod or cut out of a sheet of metal', and I preferably press the pad into concavooonvex form, aind provide it 'with perforations which latter permit the air to mach the ruptnred part for v entilating -the same, anti hencerelieving.it of mnch of that itohing sensation incident to the use of a solid pad.
F designates an elastie band, which I have shown as being applied by buttoning 13116 ends thereof upou knobs (6 a seeured to the pads.
The lower knobs a a fnrnish a means for applying secondary bancls 120 pass around tlre legs, for keeping the trnss lower down onthe body when such partionlar adju'strnent is fonnd-necessary.
In eases where the trnss is to be worn by a person having but one rupt'ure, one pad, A, only need be used, and tl1e other pa.d m'ay be a plain piece of metal, 01 n cushion-pad; or lt may be of any suitable form 01' shape to balance the frarne and fnrnish a means for attaehing the other end of the strap o1 band, as is obvious, and iiris likewise evident tha.t, instead 0f the pe1forated concavo-convex pad, any other of the man y styles of pads in the market-may be employed.
The horizontal bar B serves an important feature. It lies aeross the abdomen and causes the pmls t-o maintain their proper p0sition 011 the rupture and entirely prevents the m6tion of the body frorntwisting or turning the truss so as to displace tl1e pa.d or
pads; und I have sl1own this horizontal bar B as cov er'ed wit-h kicl, but such covering wonlcl notbe' necessary were the platemade thiok enough und. the edges ronncled, or the edges turned over, so as not to indent und press into the flesl1.
What I claim as m}? invention, und desire to secnre by Letters Patent, is-- Ahernia truss, consisting of tl1 e horizontal bar B, and the pads A, conneetecl by the bars E, G, and D, or their equivalents, all being struck up from a single piece 0f metal, 'snbstantially as herein specified.
OHAS. MORRILL.
