I e 3 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. GABRIEL LAJJAVIERE, OF sn-nrrrmnon, ASSIGNOR TO sooIE'TE LOUIS VINSON & cm, or ST.-ETIE1\TNE, FRANCE.
WAISTBAND FOR SKIRTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL LADAVIiJRE, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 28 Rue des Mouliniers, St.-Etienne, Loire, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Waistbands for Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the bands adapted to be fixed at the inside of the waist part of skirts for stiffening or reinforcing the same and it has for its object to improve said bands by providing them with transverse stiffening ribs easily removable. For this purpose, the band is provided at suitable points on one of its faces with small pockets made in one piece with the band and in transverse alinement by pairs so that celluloid or other ribs or blades of the usual rectangular shape may be inserted by their ends into said pockets. By this means, the ribs are secured to the band without any sewing operation and can be easily removed and replaced. Moreover the middle part of said ribs being left uncovered, the quality of said ribs may be easily ascertained by the customer. If one or more ribs are broken, it is sufficient for removing the same to disengage the ends thereof from the pockets into which they are inserted. The ribs may then be replaced immediately by new ones. Any per son using the band can also remove one or more ribs at any given place of the skirt waist if desired without any troublesome manipulation or deteriorating the band.
In the annexed drawing given by way of example: Figure 1 is a partial elevation of an improved waistband, Fig. 2 is a vertical section along the line A-A, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section along the line BB,
a designates the band proper which has usually a coarse grain pattern. Small pockets b are made in one piece with said band in the weaving operation. Said pockets are transversely arranged by pairs on one face of the band so as to face each other as shown. The stiffening blades or ribs 0 made of celluloid or any other suitable material have their ends inserted into the opposite pockets in each transverse pair so that the ribs are thus fastened to the band while they are easily removable.
The band or strip may be made of any suitable material; it may be straight as shown or have a curved shape. The ribs can also be held in addition to the pockets described by being inserted through one or more intermediate loops formed on the band, in the case of bands having a great width.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A waist band made of fabric having transverse pockets woven in one piece with said band on one face thereof and arranged in two rows along the edges of the band, said pockets being spaced from each other in each row and the pockets in one row being in alinement with the pockets of the other row so as to enable the insertion into the opposite pockets of removable stiffening blades, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GABRIEL LADAVIERE.
