CHRISTOPHER FINDLAY IRWIN, or S-ANDERSVILLE, GEORGIA.
NOTE-LED GER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 18, 1912.
Patented June 9, 1914. Serial No. 698,195.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER FINDLAY IRWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandersville, in the county of Washington and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Note-- Ledgers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved ledger for use in banking houses to keep account of notes and similar instruments, the object of the invention being to provide an improved form of ledger ofthis character by means of which all particulars with reference to the notes of parties obtaining loansv at the banks may be readily ascertained at a glance and which also forms a liability ledger and a maturity tickler or indicator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ledger of this kind with means for indicating either approximately or exactly the dates of maturity of the notes entered in the ledger.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of a port-ion of a ledger in open position, arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing another leaf.
Each sheet 1 of my improved ledger may be ruled for one or for several accounts and is provided with ruled lines 2 and also with a series of columns on the debit side and a series of columns on the credit side. On "the debit side there is a column 8 for entries of the dates of the several notes of each person or concern whose notes are handled at the bank, a column 4 for entry of the amounts of the said note or notes, a column 5 for entry of the dates of maturity of the notes, a column 6 for entry of the rate of interest and whet-her the interest is payable from the date of the making or the date of the maturity of the note or notes, and a column 7 for the entry of the numbers of the notes. The debit and credit sides of the sheet are separated by a column 8' in which entries may be made of the indorsers or joint makers of the notes. The credit side of the sheet is provided with several ruled lines 9 for each ruled entry line 10 of the sheet so that each of the date and amount columns 1112 of the credit side of the ledger sheet is provided with several spaces for each space between the lines 10 and in the present instance there are three of such spaces in each credit column for each principal or entry space of the'sheet, so that provision is made for the entry of partial payments up to nine, for each note.
The condition of the amount of any person or firm whose notes are handled by the bank can be ascertained instantly by reference to the-ledger as all of the notes of any individual note maker are entered in the same space under his name and an inspection of the ledger at any time will indicate all the particulars with reference to eachnote and the payments thereon of each maker and the bank keeping the ledger can at a glance ascertain all the facts connected with any note of any person or firm and as to Whether the same were paid promptly upon maturity or not. Hence, the ledger is extremely useful not only for keeping the accounts but also as apprising the institution in which the ledger is kept as to how each customer has met his obligations and whether or not he is entitled to more credit or additional credit. The ledger, when properly kept, preserves a complete record of all the notes and also becomes a liability ledger and a maturity tickler or indicator.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of improved means for indicating the dates of maturity of the notes entered in the ledger and in carrying out this feature of my invention, I provide a calendar column 13 which is secured on the inner side of the back or cover 14 of the ledger and at a point opposite the free edges of the leaves. In the form of the invention shown in the drawing, this calendar column indicates the months. The bookkeeper, when entering a note on a sheet of the ledger attaches thereto at the free edge thereof a tab 15 of a certain color or character, say, a blue tab and the tab is attached at a point corresponding with the month in which the note will become due and is arranged to project beyond the free edge of the sheet so that when the book is opened at the account of that particular note the tab will coact with the calendar column to indicate either exactly or approximately the date of maturity of the note. hen a note becomes overdue, the bookkeeper attaches a tab 16 of a different color or character, for instance, a red tab and at a point at the free edge of the sheet which, in connection with the calendar column indicates approximately or exactly, as the case may be, the datewhen the note became overdue. Hence, the ledger Copies of this patent may be obtained for prominently indicates the dates of maturity of the notes entered therein and if they are not paid also indicates prominently the dates when they became due. The ledger, is, in practice, also provided with suitable index sheets, as indicated at 17; These indeX sheets are to contain the names of all the parties With Whom accounts are kept and the numbers of the pages containing the ing across the columns of the credit side and forming entry spaces the last named entry lines being closer together than the first named entry lines so that a plurality of spaces is provided on the credit side in horizontal alinement with each horizontal space of the debit side, said leaves also having indicating devices at and projecting from the free edges thereof, the said back having a calendar column arranged thereon opposite the free edges of the leaves and containing the names of the months in vertical chronological order, the indicating de- .7
vices of the leaves extending over said calendar columns.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
