HELEN H. COWING, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SCHOOL-REGISTER.
To @ZZ lwhom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HELEN H. CowING, citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in School-Registers, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which l have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to registers or record books, such as are used in schools or similar' institutions for the keeping of attendance records and the like.
The object of the invention is the provision of a register of the character in hand that will not only present a convenient means for entering the daily record of the several pupils, or other individuals, but also facilitate the summarization of such daily records into the monthly and annual statements of attendance, etc., that are ordinarily required in the connection noted.
To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, said invention then `consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain means for carrying out the invent-ion, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing:-Figure l is a plan view of a summary sheet forming one of the features of my improved register; while Fig. 2 is a similar view of a daily record sheet to cooperate with said summary sheet; Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the summary sheet and the monthly sheet which is superposed on the former showing the same in an operative relation.
The general arrangement of these sheets A B should be fairly obvious from an inspection of the figures just referred to; a very brief description will hence suiiice so far as structural details are concerned. Preferably these sheets are detachable from the book or binder in which they are designed to be kept when in use, and to this end are punched along one side as shown. When held in their proper position within the binder, by means of the holes z a, thus provided, the daily record sheet B is designed to be superposed upon the summary Specification of Letters Patent.

sheet A, and as will be obvious, a plurality of such sheets B may, if desired or found necessary be thus employed, one on top of the other. Being shorter than the summary sheet, such daily record sheet, however, will not cover the summary sheet entirely, but will leave a rather wide margin along the left side of the latter.
Summary sheet A is transversely ruled, there being as many lines a" provided as there are individual records to be kept. Such sheet is then further divided into a series of vert-ical columns a? to as inclusive, appropriated by suitable indicia for the reception of the names of the pupils, the serial numbers belonging thereto, the number of days not belonging for each month of the entire period covered by the summary record, the total number of days belonging of attendance, and of absence during such period, and the number of days absent for each of the months included in such period. Additional columns a am may be provided for the date of entrance or receipt by transfer of the respective pupils, withdrawal or loss by transfer, and such other items of interest as may be desired. The margin to the right of the sheet is utilized for a summary all of such transfer records and also for a summary @12 of the total belonging, attendance, and absence records. Space cl3 for the totals of the several vertical columns is provided across the lower margin of the sheet.
The daily record sheet B designed to cooperate with the summary sheet as has been previously indicated, is ruled to correspond with said summary sheet, and the lines Z2 thereon are furthermore numbered in the same fashion as are the lines of the first sheet. rEhe numbers Z22 in this case, however, are along the eXtreme left margin of the sheet, and, by reason of the disparity in size between the two sheets, are thus brought closely adjacent to the serial numbers of the summary sheet when sheet B is superposed thereon. In this way cross-identification of the lines on the two sheets is readily effected, and confusion of names and records. avoided. Such daily record sheet is divided into vertical columns Z13 for the receipt of the daily record of attendance of the several pupils and will ordinarily be thus prepared to receive the records for a full months attendance, being divided into columns of weeks and days. To the right of the sheet are provided appropriately designated spaces bt b5 for noting changes in registration, or enrollment, and in belonging during the period covered by the sheet, as also spaces l2 o7 be tor the reception ot' the total number of days actually belonging, absent, and in attendance.
.ln use, then, when the records or any particular daily record sheet B have been all. entered in as at the conclusion ot' a inonrhs school, the sheet is doubled just sulticiently to bring its lett margin into line first With the appropriate monthly sub-column under the column at designated, Number of days not belonging, and a,v transfer etlected ot the record ot those pupils Who may have belonged to the school only part oi' the time. Above the name ot each month there is a space in `which may be recorded the number of school days in that month. llt the end of the year or ot any period, these numbers added furnish the number ot days in the entire school year or in the period required. The number indicating the total number ot days that a pupil has not belonged to the school can then be subtracted easily trom the aforesaid number at the top ot the column. Similarly the number olf days of absence charged against each pupil on the daily rec ord tor the month in question are thus transferred to column u?. llt the end ot the year or ot any required period the total number of days belonging, ot' attendance and absence are then easily entered into the columns a5 a al intermediately between the two series ot sub-columns just referred to, the figures from which the calculation ot the several items is derived being conveniently disposed to either hand.
lt in addition to leaving thecolumn ot names a2, and of serial numbers a, uncovered, the daily record sheet be made sutliciently narrow to similarly expose the column am tor noting Withdrawals or losses by transiter', the number enrolled at any time is readily determined by simply subtracting the total oitI such losses trom the highest serial number and the remainder may then be placed in the properly designated space on the right margin of the sheet.
Other means of applying the principle ot' my invention may be employed instead ot the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent ot such stated means be employed.
l therefore particularly point out and dis tinctly claim as my invention 1. ln a school register, the combination With a summary sheet ruled transversely, vertical lines dividing said sheet into a series ot columns, the tirst column on the lett being ct a Width adapted to receive the pupils names, suitable indicia appropriating the remaining columns for the reception of the number ot days each did not belong during specitied months, the total number of days belonging, attendance, and absence, during the Whole of the period including such specilied months, and the number ot days of absence tor each of such months, said columns' being arranged in the order named; ot a monthly sheet superposed upon said sinnmary sheet similarly ruled transversely and partially covering the same only so as to leave the iirst two columns above named thereon disclosed, vertical lines dividing said monthly sheet into a. series ot columns, and suitable indicia appropriating such columns for a record of the daily attendance ot' each pupil.
2. ln a school register, the combination with a summary sheet ruled transversely, vertical lines dividing said sheet into a series ot columns, the first tvvo columns at the lett being ot a width adapted to receive the pupils naines and serial numbers therefor, res aectively; the irst column on the lett being ot' a Width adapted to receive the pupils names, suitable indicia appi'opriating the remaining columns tor the reception of the number of days each did not belong during specified months, the total number of days ot belonging, attendance, and absence, during` the Whole of the period including such specified months, and the number ot days ot absence 'for each of such months, said columns being arranged in the order named; ot' a monthly sheet superposed upon said summary sheet similarly ruled transversely and partially covering the same only so as to leave the lirst two columns above named thereon disclosed, vertical lines dividing said monthly sheet into a series of columns; suitable indicia appropriating such columns for a record ot the daily attendance of each pupil, spaces atthe right of such columns, and suitable indicia appropriating such spaces tor the record of chang-es in registration and belonging, and for calculating the number of days of actually belonging, total absences, and attendance.
Signed by me this 17th day of July, 1908.
